Bone Head Move

Was at my range in Lander Wyoming yesterday shooting my 44 Mag Mountain Gun and my Freedom Arms 41 Mag. Had both on the bench with a few boxes of hand loads. After shooting both for awhile I shot a cylinder or the 44 mag and could not eject the cases. Yep, I loaded 41 Mag rounds in the Mountain Gub. I had a wooden rod in my shooting box and was able to punch them out. The brass was trashed but I could not find any thing wrong with the gun. I fired several cylinders of ammo and all seemed fine. Should I have any concerns about this?

no harm done to the gun. You should be able to reload the brass - as 44 mag, not 41 mag, just use the appropriate shell holder (or did it split?). Actually, now that I think about it, I've seen JimT shoot 44's in a 45, don't recall the 41 in a 44 though. Still, the brass did its job, sealed the breach. I suspect your accuracy wasn't that great and probably had a bunch of keyholing too!

I will have to be REAL careful if I do hot loads for my 45

Blackhawk not to shoot them in my 45 Astra. Same goes for my Rossi 92 in 357 being careful not to shoot in std 357 revolver.

I have a very fond relationship and memory of the 41 Mag. Back in 1967 magnum revolvers were very scarce due to Viet Nam. I was in the Air Force stationed in Pinedale Wyoming and my good friend managed to find a Ruger old model 41 Mag Blackhawk with a 4 5/8 inch barrel. We had a ball with it shooting Rock Chucks. I still remember the serial number as 68. He was killed later on in South East Asia. I will always have a connection with the 41.

I'm just ribbing you about it. It's a fine caliber...

Charlie Hanna and I were shooting his Virginia Dragoon in 44 mag a couple years ago in Raton, NM. Charlie had several boxes of his handloads that he wanted us to shoot up and one shot sounded funny and recoiled differently so we stopped shooting to see what the problem was. He couldn't extract the fired case so he retired to his truck to sort out the problem. He came back to me a few minutes later apologizing over and over and showed me the split case he had pounded out of the chamber...yep...41 mag! I spoke with him recently and we reminisced about that day...it sticks with you and is something you most likely won't do again!

Knocks on wood, thankfully I'm very careful and haven't done

So yet.

At one time I shot a bunch of .38 Spl brass in a 41......

Long Colt. I was fireforming cases before Starline started making the 41LC. Did a couple of hundred of them. I never had a new case split. I did have a couple of old cases split, so I stopped using them. No problems with the gun.

It was an Old Model Ruger so the recessed rims centered the case quite well. They came out looking a lot like a .45ACP. Ran 5 for 5 on a empty 5 gallon oil can at close quarters and only discovered my mistake when I went to put the empties back into an already full box of .45 Colts.

Had a friend almost fire a 30-06 round in a 270

by stonewalrus, Thursday, June 26, 2014, 11:31 (3745 days ago) @ Art

Fortunately the bolt wouldn't completely close and he pulled out the round to see what was wrong with it. That would NOT have ended well.

I fired a 300 H&H in a 300 Weatherby once.

On purpose even.
Does that count?

Ran out of .30 caliber blanks on the first day of a 3-day field problem at ROTC camp at Ft. Bragg in 1966. However, we had beaucoup 7.62 for the M60s which of course wouldn't work for more than 5-6 rounds without jamming. We delinked a whole bunch of 7.62 and ran our M1 Garands with them for two days. We had no blank adapters anyway, and had to work the bolts manually, but they shot just fine. The brass looked a little funny when it came out....

Oh yeah....

Bought an 8mm Mauser only to find it to have been rechambered to 8mm-06.

Brass came out kinda funny on that as well.

Oh yeah....

Just found out we have a 8MM-06 in the family. My 5 year old nephew was given it by his Grand Dad it was his Fathers'. Of course his Father will use it until he is old enough. His Dad is a shooter and hunter but not real gun savy. He was asking about what it was. I need to get up to speed on it. Sounds kind od interesting. Think it would be a great Elk round.

It's a fun round.

I'm sure you know it's just an '06 what shoots .323" bullets. That gets you easily into the ~200gr. neighborhood for projectiles. Same basic powders as the '06. Kinda splits the gap between the 8x57 and the 8mm RemMag. I have a couple other kinks to work out of mine and then we go hunting.
