How small is the Springfield XDs 45 - well....

by stonewalrus, Saturday, June 21, 2014, 15:01 (3750 days ago)

American Rifleman had a full size picture of one. Got out my LCP and laid on it - picture below. One almost followed me horn today but it was a two tone and I want all black (non-gun wife - a black plastic pistol is a black plastic pistol).

It appears to be somewhat smaller than my Defender.

By the way. You might tell your dealer, as of right this very moment, Lipseys has 5 of the black 'uns in stock.

And not a lot bigger than my Airweight 38.

The thing that kills that size auto for me is that hunk sticking out past the Smiths hammer. I've had a handful of 'pocket' nines and while the fit in the same size box As a J frame and are as thin or thinner, they just don't pocket carry well for me. A buddy had a Glock 36, but sold of because it was the same size as his G19. Less power, yes, but more than double the capacity more than makes up for it! I figure if I'm going to put a gun in a belt holster, for serious social use, I'm going with a full or at least mid sized gun that carries as many bullets as possible! No spray and pray for me, but it seems like these days, groups of bad guys are more the norm.

Agreed!

A pistol has that square corner that doesn't feel as comfortable in AIWB carry. The grip on the revolver naturally follows the contour of the waistline when you sit and lacks the obtrusive back-of-slide corner. I've almost fully convinced myself that a 4" .357 is my first line of defense if I need a handgun for serious work. It was good enough for Jordan, Skeeter and a host of others who's lives depended on a serious gun. I've never wanted to carry a backup but lately I've thought it might be a good idea so this 938 gets the nod. There are times it's my only carry gun but if I felt I was definitely going into harm's way I'm going first with a .357.

How small is the Springfield XDs 45 - well....

I handled one when first out. It is a remarkably thin and short .45. Much more compact than the Glock G36 also being looked over at same time. Being a new gun and a remarkably small new gun, I passed and bought the tried and true G36, probably because it was cleaner not covered with writing or decorative racy texturings so market driven.

Have not regretted the choice even though only pockets the Glock works with are those of field jacket size and larger.

The Glock is probably about as small as I will go as autos work on reciprocating mass or speed and the smaller they are, the less forgiving.

I have yet to induce a jam in the Glock even when held with two fingers and flopping all over the place with arm outstretched at side and wrist bent 90 degs while shooting. It is far from perfect in any way for me (aside from perhaps rust resistance better than stainless), but at least it seems trustworthy

Forgot to mention

The main difference between the two pistols was the longer magazine with finger rest on Glock. If a five shot magazine was offered for it, it would be nearly same size as the XDs as to make not much practical difference, even though the Springfield is most definitely thinner and shorter barreled (?), but that was a while back.

I have a second XDs on lay away. Better trigger that any factory Glock, too.

No trouble centering clay pigeons. I thought it handled well and was maybe a little gentler on the recoil than a Glock 27. Wasn't sure I wanted one before shooting it but I liked it. Wouldn't want to spend hours at the range with it but that is not what it is intended for.

My XDs .45 is very accurate

by cubrock, Saturday, June 21, 2014, 17:22 (3750 days ago) @ uncowboy

Consistently shoots one ragged hole groups at 7-10 yards for me and a buddy who tested it with me, with both defense loads and cast bullet range loads. Points very instinctively and point-shooting steel poppers in a shooting house was very easy. He and I both ran through the house with the gun through different scenarios and missed only a couple times in the beginning, including on double taps. Once we were used to the gun, we scored hits every time.

I won't be without my XDs now.

same here as for fit, but somehow

by visitor, Saturday, June 21, 2014, 18:57 (3750 days ago) @ uncowboy

Somehow it reminds me of a 1911 with arched MSH and long trigger. I manage to shoot it as well at twentyfive as most 1911s. And as a major 1911 fan, I hate to admit it has put them to shame for out of box behavior and safety (I had a new Colt develop a simultaneous worn hammer notch and weak sear spring within first year, discovered when gun blew a hole through my mattress when chambering a round with finger off trigger).

So, all things considered, the Glock works for me. Also forgot to mention one other serious consideration which led to Glock over Springfield, which is muzzle velocity.

Quoted tests by all manner of writers and posters gives the G36 very close to 1911 velocity with quite a few loads. The XDs seems to cross some minimal barrel length threshold and most velocities I have seen are disappointingly reduced.

If it works for you, it's perfect. I thought the 30s was IT,

but it just isn't, for me. And I find myself carrying a 1911 more than any other.

finally getting their kinks figured out enough to make them reliable with 'some' JHP's. Then I shot my first G30 and it made me wonder why I went to all that work. If I needed a small 45, the 30 or one of its variants is what I would carry. I can buy any part I want for it, work on it myself, mod the trigger pull with OEM parts. Mags and holsters are everywhere.

And rumor has it I like 1911's.

I've shot 3 XDs now. All of them ran OK but 2 had trouble ejecting live rounds. It seemed like they were a little short-chambered? Granted it was probably just new-gun bugs, but when it comes to weapons I like proven stuff.

Kind of what I was trying to say, but you said it better. I have every spare part available for the gun and spent maybe over one hundred dollars.

The one kink of the 36 which seems to pop up on forums is a sporadic FTE and generally cured by going to a sharper and better shaped non-LCI extractor

I've said this before but...

by rob @, Saturday, June 21, 2014, 20:03 (3750 days ago) @ Sarge

It bears repeating...If Glock would ever come out with a mid and full sized .45 in single stack and as thin as the G36, I'd go pick up one of each right now and keep them for life. I like the 36 a lot but prefer a bit longer barrel and a little more capacity than the 36 and XDs. I just can't shoot the double stack 45 Glocks well but the guns are excellent if a bit on the homely side.

Great gun. Have a brand new one, black, for sale...

Still might, but with a Sig P938 I really don't need another small gun. However, I really like the little XDs and while I didn't think I'd like the two tone, the one I almost bought was two tone and I really fell in love with it in the store. It was very hard to walk away from it. I may still pick one up later but I'm still trying to outfit the 938 right now with extra mags, just bought a White Hat Mini-Tuck (waiting impatiently for it to show up) and next will be a set of XS Big Dot Express sights. If not a 45 XDs for me, I've already got the wife looking hard at them in 9mm and I'm sure one of those will come home soon. I love the red front fiber optic sight!

by just shoving the slide up front of the the target and pulling trigger straight back, all at once. This works OK in good light or just enough light to confirm that the slide is square on to whatever you're shooting at. At least that's how I adapted to the machine and it gets me quick, sure hits to about 25 yards.

My LCP has been 100% reliable. It is the easiest carrying semi-serious pocket gun I've ever tried and it's even fairly accurate. But its sights are indeed pitiful. I don't have much money in mine and I'm seriously considering filing the front sight off, center-drilling the slide and tapping it for the smallest tritium shotgun sight I can find. Something along these lines, but with headlights-

Squaring up the rear of the slide works pretty well. The AMT Backup I used to have was that way. I think Jim Cirillo pushed that technique. I did put a laser on my LCP which helps too.
