My grandmother's grandfather bought a place just
south of Sabbath Day Point at which place the Brits once encamped while on their way to attack the French and killed an Indian or two skulking around the camp. Said kill site was said to be where we had our outhouse... Great fun to go to the john at 2 in the morning! Of course Grandma Flint's family had great fun giving "odd" esoteric names to things. Boats had names such as Winona and Nokomis and the original camp building was called the Windigo house. Bought in 1884 the family sadly had to sell the camp as taxes rose and the number of owners capable of paying said taxes and maintenance declined.
Here's a photo from the lake. The main building is above the dock, the little 2 room sleeping building was called the dovecote:
This is my grandmother in Winona (there was a sister boat which went who knows where, Winona is in the Mystic Seaport Museum):
My mom with Winona in 1935 or 1936 at Lake George:
Sorry if I got carried away but I have very fond memories of that place. I was very fortunate to have the family I had...
