As we say in STL, "A far inch model farteen far screw."

It's ugly, the grips and the rear sight are wrong, but it is a genuine factory 4 inch model 14 4 screw. My SCSW book states that there were some Air Force marked 4 inch guns, and a run of 1040 for the Dayton OH Police, and this is not one of either.

I like guns like that. Let us know how she shoots!
Were the Dayton PD guns marked?
Another thought

I wonder if someone had a Model 14 and had it rebarreled with a Model 15 barrel? Just a thought. Not saying it isn't factory as it sits. Either way, it is a way cool little popper.
M-15 barrels are tapered.

This one is a straight profile.
I don't know about the markings on the Dayton guns, but this one is well under the serial number range for those.
You are right

Looks to me like it is not as there is NO bug screw.
Nope, but there is one in front of the trigger guard.

Got a Model 15 in about that same shape that I paid $129 for 'way back when. it's earned every one of its scuffs and scrapes, and still serves faithfully. I like purty guns, but the grizzled old veterans are the ones I usually have with me when shootin' time comes.
Cool ol' gun...indeed.

My first S&W and my first revolver was a HB Model 10 to which someone had done a "bad thing" leaving the finish mottled, at best. Durn thing shot a hundred times better than it looked and taught me an awful lot about revolvers and the shooting pistols. I gave it to Son No. 1 on his 30th birthday where it still serves.
