NRA convention

This year the NRA Annual Convention is in Indianapolis, where I happen to call home. I've never been to one (I read it was '79 last time it was here), and was wondering what it was like from anyone who has been to one. I keep hearin about concerts and speaking events and honestly, I don't care about most of that stuff. I have also heard its like a mini SHOT Show. That part interests me more. Is it something I should devote a few hours to, all day Saturday or the whole weekend? Is anyone planning on traveling to the show?

It will be in Nashville next year - I will be there!

The last one in Nashville was over 20 years ago. It was great - very much mini Shot Show. I am sure it has majorly improved since then. I expect to take a day off to go.

My wife and I will be there...

We get in on Thursday evening and plan on spending Friday and Saturday there. We are heading to Saturday night to Columbus, OH, with the some friends, to shoot sporting clays at the Cardinal Center.

It is definitely more than a couple of hours worth. It is pretty much like the SHOT show, maybe a tad smaller, but there is tons to see. Not like your typical gun show where you can be done in a few hours. There are lots of lectures/seminars, etc... (for example, a few years ago, at the Charlotte show, my wife and I sat in on a talk by Craig Boddington on African safari hunting.)

There are also concerts, and speakers, etc.. There is a lot to do.

That being said, you can certainly make whatever you want out of it and, if you only have a few hours, can select the few booths you want to visit to maximize your time there.

Hope this helps, and perhaps we'll see you there!!

. . . you can make as much or as little of it as you desire.

It's a huge gathering of all the "big dawgs" in the industry along with many celebrities and politicians favorable to the Second Amendment concept and seeking "our" support. Sort of a gathering of the faithful, if you will.

It's also a place for the everyday member to see/meet many of the folks we read about and who are published in the "slick" magazines and on web blogs.

And of course every firearms manufacturer and accessory vender under the sun will be represented with nice displays.

It's a "do not miss" event if you can make it, particularly if you live there and don't need motel rooms and restaurants. It's a two-hour drive for us, and we'll very likely be there for at least one day just to take in the "show".

If you go, you WILL end up spending all the time

from when you arrive until they close the exhibition floor. Come Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Just a couple of notes... The Contemporary Longrifle Association will NOT have a booth this year because their application was "lost" by the NRA. If you would, stop by Yankee Hill Machine and ask for Perry Fuller. There will be shooting "celebrities" on the floor. Most are more than amenable to a howdy. I think the Quinns will be there. I usually stop them to say hi. MY wife LOVES it. She has to go every year since I took her to Charlotte. She likes the "other" stuff such as the country jam, leadership forum, Saturday night rally, book signings, etc. and has learned from the exhibits.

spend 2 days and carry a soft side brief case with shoulder strap for all the catalogs and hand outs, carry snacks and water and wearer comfortable shoes.
If you have had a problem with any product this is your chance to eyeball the guy in charge and state your case. I highly recommend that you do it. I got a hotel room and picked Matt up at college so he could have the experience when it was in Pittsburg. He was impressed. Also take a good camera ,great photo opts not to be missed. Don't miss it. Camera, YES, a must have...

I displayed at 9 of them and probably attended another 15. None in the past 10 years.
Nearly all of the companies that we displayed with, or I should say company owners and or Company reps. are still alive. Gone of the few close friends are: Fred and Buzz Huntington, Ray Speer, Arlen Chaney, Bruce Hodgdon,to name a few. RIP :-(
