OT. My Brother just was awarded the Army Bronze Star
My Dad was awarded one back in 1966 for volunteering for the People to People Program. Teams of Air Force medics and doctors were sent to recently pacified villages to introduce the concept of institutional medicine to the local populace.
The medics dispensed medicine and care, but they were always armed. My Dad carried two S&W Model 15s -- the snubnose in a shoulder holster and a 4-incher in a hip holster. His choice of range for the snubnose? "You gotta be close enough to kiss 'em," he said. I doubt if he ever got the test that theory.
It was not unknown for Green Berets to use them as bait to set up counter-ambushes for the VC.
