Can anyone recommend a gunsmith.....

.....who can rebarrel a Swedish rolling block rifle? I picked one up for a smoking deal, and it is very, very clean, but is chambered in 8x58R. I was thinking I would like to have a .50-70 again, but hope not to spend a mint getting there.

Swede Rollin Block.....

Sounds interesting, Ron. Can you provide any details?

I'm thinking of using a Green Mountain octagon blank, if I can find the twist and bore to suit. They advertise some tapered octagon blanks as well.

What is this fellow's work and pricing like? Does he happen to be the 'smith that advertises on gunbroker?

Besides the two smiths recommended here, I've found two more who have rolling block experience. One is here in Washington, about 3 or 4 hours away. Might go with him.

Got this rifle from Simpsons Ltd., perfect action, decent wood, but the 33" long barrel is 8x58r, and very funky inside. BTW, it is an antique, so shipped directly to me. Figure either rebarrel to .50-70 or rebore to....? This 8mm cartridge is usually made from .45-90 brass, so I have a few routes I can take on a rebore. We shall see!

You might call JES Rifle Reboring (541)942-1342. He could more than likely fix you up. The people that have used him report they were happy and say he does good work.

If it were me, I'd check with Lee Shaver..

Lee has been working on black powder cartridge rifles for years, and lots of experience with rolling blocks too.... I'd give him a call....
