Barnes tsx 55 grain performance

by Bob Hatfield @, Saturday, December 21, 2013, 19:32 (3995 days ago)

I shot a doe for canning today with my 16 inch AR with a 3x Burris scope. I used a handload consisting of a 55 grain Barnes TSX bullet over 26.2 grains of H-4895 (IIRC). This is a 5.56 pressure load according to Barnes. This load chronographs about 2860 fps out of the 16 inch barrel.

I shot the doe at a distance of 195 yards. I used a Leupold rangefinder before the shot. I hit little farther back than I like but the all copper bullet broke a rib on the way in and richochet slightly off the bottom of the vertabra and absolutely disintegrated the liver and breaking an offside rib and stopping under the hide. It was a bang flop. I did not find the bullet in the mess. It was under the hide on the offside but I lost it while gutting the deer.

I have never seen a liver blown to bits by a bullet like that before. That all copper bullet with it's 4 petals spinning an ungodly rpm is most destructive. I would venture to say it would have exited out of a 20 inch barrel with the extra velocity.

makes me wonder?

what I could expect from my 16.5" 220 Swift. It wears a PacNor 3 groove 1-6" twist for the 80 Amax and 90 Berger VLD's.

The 80's run 3000 fps........

Jeff loves that bullet. (Nm)

Wow! I need to rethink

by anachronism, Saturday, December 21, 2013, 21:13 (3995 days ago) @ Bob Hatfield

I need to rethink my uneducated prejudices against using my AR15 on deer. I would have been down to it this year, and I do keep Winchester 64 gr Powerpoints around, but if you got these results at 195 yards, it's time for me to wake up.

I've been trying to stock up on the Barnes Vortex...

For mine. It's accurate and I sorta figured it would perform about like you describe. I need to buy some component bullets to reload now that I know my rifle likes them.

Deer

Started hunting farm deer the last few years and god forbid I bought the only magnum rifle I ever sort of admired or figured I'd ever use (7mm Remington). I missed a nice big fat doe at 400 yards with that 7mm mag from a (prone rest) that I thought I knew the trajectory earlier that morning. (need range time with that thing) So I said "heck I'm not going to shoot anything over 200 yards the rest of the day. I knew the AR was dead on at 200 and have been watching all the video's of the vortex bullets performance and peoples reviews. I really would have liked it to have gone through the lungs.

When I was spilling the innards out I kept seeing lots of what looked like clotted up blood. After examining it it was the liver in a hundred small pieces. Its like when the spinning bullet hit it inside the deer the reaction was like shooting a melon. Some of the bits of meat and blood actually spit back out the entrance wound as the deer was falling.

Barnes tsx 62gr for me

by bmize, Monday, December 23, 2013, 11:43 (3994 days ago) @ Bob Hatfield

I've been loading the 62gr over 26 gr of varget. getting 2890 out of a 20" LTR.
I'm loading out to 2.320" and still getting some crunch when seating after tapping the case to settle the powder.
Barnes data shows 25.5 as max with varget loaded to mag length. I don't know if you can get that much powder in there and load to mag length.

BTW, Target Sports USA has loaded Win 64gr PP in stock. Ain't cheap(22.90). I ordered a case just to try them out.
Best I remember Byron has take several deer with them.

5.56mm on deer.........

by Byron, Monday, December 23, 2013, 14:55 (3993 days ago) @ bmize

All the experts know that the .223 is not enough gun for Whitetails and only suitable for small game.

Still, I have shot a small sample of deer with the 5.56mm and have not ever found it wanting.

While I have used different loads(all with perfect results), my standard load is a M262 spec reload of 77 gr match bullet over a case of Varget. I see little difference between the internal damage caused with this compared to a .308 soft point bullet.

5.56mm on deer.........

I thought I remember you posting a few pic's of Doe's you have take with the Win 64 PP bullet and you saying it worked very well.
I've looked for bullets to load myself a few times with no luck. Ran into these a week ago and ordered them.
I don't normally plan to hunt deer with a 223, but I do want ammo capable if needed.
My deer rifle right now is a 6.5x47L or 6.5 CM loaded with Barnes 127gr TTSX LR.

Merry Christmas Y'all
