Deer season ended Sunday in Kansas.

I take it as vacation so had a ton of catch up at the office. Was kind of disappointing until the end. Bitter arctic blast and high winds kegged the deer up. The bucks I saw were simply too young to harvest. Numbers in the Flint Hills were sharply reduced due to drought and blue tongue. In any event we hunted and as the saying goes, a bad day hunting beats a good day at the office.

My Dad went out everyday, which at 87 and with the bitter cold we experienced, was nothing short of remarkable to me. We both enjoyed it and are looking forward to next year. He didn't score, and I took a doe on the morning of last Sunday. I decided to let my Dad and 14 year old son hunt Sunday evening since I'd taken the doe so I sat in the truck and waited to hear a shot. At 5:00 a shot rang out.

About 10 minutes later my 14 year old called on his cell phone to say he couldn't find blood. I was about half a mile away and drove on down to his stand. He'd marked the spot where the buck was standing and was waiting. My Dad was looking around a bit further east of the spot (40 yards) and as I pulled up he let out a whoop.

Made my season as well as my Dad's.

Thomas was shooting a .250 Savage with a handload I'd concocted with a 100 grain Remington Core-lokt. No exit. I think we'll switch to Nosler Partitions or Barnes next year.
