Here's an interesting article on the effect of shortening the barrel.

Mattel's Toy For Adults?

?

The well written and organized article was about barrel lenght in AR15 rifles.

What does Mattel have to do with that?

the late 70s, I realized an ultra-short 5.56 was mostly "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". The blast was absolutely ridiculous. Granted, it had a regular M16A1 flash suppressor on it at the time. As I recall, it had been tinkered with quite a bit to get it to function reliably with the short barrel and gas system.

If a person is determined to have an ultra-short AR, 300BLK would be a much better chambering.

Doc Dater has been around the suppressor industry for a long while.

It took quite a lot of effort

and intensive study to field a round optimized for the 'Confined Space Assault Weapon' fielded by certain unnamable units.

Also, another ten years or so of work to finally field the replacement (M855A1) for the M855 'green tip' round that happens to work quite well in the M4/A1.

Barrel length is still of importance, but not to the extent it was even five years ago.

I really would like an ammo can full of the M855A1 ammo ;-)
