629-2 MR.Gun prices are nuts.

I've mentioned before that I recently traded into a S&W 629-2 Mountain Revolver. These were the pilot gun for the popular Mountain Gun series. My original plan was to have it cut for moon clips, and use it for a light amount of bowling pin matches, and as a general "carrying around" gun. This was the plan, at least until I checked the auction results for similar guns. OMG! The values are skyrocketing on all S&W big bores, and I just watched one sell on GB for $900.00. So now mines a safe queen, and I need to buy something else to play with. My guns was as good or better than the one in the auction. My tax return should net me another 44. Probably a Redhawk this time. I need one anyway. Gun prices are nuts.
some prices are high due to rarity

But also, what is retail price on a new one? Some new prices are high and that has let used prices go up a lot.
No new ones . all MIM scratch on the side lesser guns now

That Mountain Revolver has a hard chrome over stainless finish and forged steel parts and no stupid lock. I paid 750 for mine in 2009. I got a deal from a friend on it.

I have one of these, have had it a long time. It's quite possibly the most accurate revolver I've ever owned. It's in the top three for sure. I like it so well that I bought a later model (but still pre-lock) 629 MG as a spare.
The Mountain Gun isn't in the current catalog, but Cabela's sells an "Outfitter" version with some Cabelas engraving on it. I think they are $800-850, that explains why the older guns are so high.
While we're on the subject of Mountain Guns. Last year I picked up a 686+ Mountain Gun, pre lock, 7 shot cylinder. It instantly became my favorite .357. Why in the world doesn't S&W make more of these?
They don't make them because revolvers don't sell...

Seriously. We sell plastic fantastic bottom feeders all day long and about 10-1 to revolvers. The concealed carry guns like the Ruger LCR, S&W Bodyguard .38, J-frame guns and Tauri sell 10-1 over the others, even the SAs. Around here, the MGs have a PERCEIVED, limited functionality (although I would think the bear hunters would love them) and are thought to kick too much. The .500s and .460s sell, but mostly to experienced shooters who love the big bang or to those who wish to brag. Still, we have a bunch of used Redhawks and Super Redhawks in the case and a 629 has been sitting for 6 months.

Revolvers are fantastically expensive right now

Revolvers are fantastically expensive right now compared to plastic crunchentickers. I do admit to having 2 Springfield XDs, but they're even cheaper guns than my stainless Ruger MKIII target model, which had another OMG price tag. We have only a couple of Redhawks in local stores, one of them is an older stainless used gun that the shops asking $850.00 for. They also have a std Redhawk that's been bobbed to 2-1/2 inches. They only want $695.00 for it. I tried to find a std Redhawk for around $500.00 locally, and failed. The local gun show had exactly one Redhawk. It was NIB, and $825.00. But you can find Glocks & XDs everywhere.
But those 10% of the guys who buy a revolver
by brionic , Wednesday, February 01, 2012, 18:51 (4679 days ago) @ Hobie
are likely to own multiple handguns, right?
And they are more likely to own a large percentage of the total number of sixguns in the area, I would think.

You might well have something there. Personally, that hits close to home. Most of the younger guys and gals like the modern, Glock-like guns but lots of older folks do as well. I'm the old, odd-stuff guy in the shop.
BTW, we got in a nickeled Colt Cobra (short grip) today. Seems to have good timing and solid lock up. Needs a good polish. $450

I love my Mountain Revolver, one of the most accurate, versatile handguns ever. Bought it new in 1989 and have put many thousands of rounds through it, mostly of the mid-velocity, lead SWC variety. It has killed a few deer, head shot quite a few squirrels, won the TSMS long range competition twice, been carried many, many days as a concealed piece and is the gun you are most likely to find with me any time.
