Picked up my Springfield 1911 last night.....

....a local fellow herebouts did the work, he worked in Army/National Guard armories until retirement from the service.

We started with a Springfield G.I. to which he fitted a selection of parts that I had acquired over the past two or three years. Everything MIM is now machined barstock save for the Kings ambidexterous safety, which I believe is cast then machined. The new parts are a mixture of Ed Brown and Fusion, along with a retro rear sight by Ted Yost. A larger profile front sight was staked in place as well.

The grip safety is an older machined G.I. that I have had for a number of years waiting in the wings. I am one of the fortunate few who has never had an issue with hammer bite, and prefer the looks of the original A1 style.

To compliment the grip safety, we used a nicely checkered beavertail spur hammer, as well as a long, solid trigger. Iffen y'all have not figured it out by now, this is a very retro A1 .45, save for the ambi-safety dictated by my southpaw tendencies.

Prior to turning it over to my local gunny, I had sent it off to Harrison Custom for his round butt frame and mainspring housing modification. It is not as rounded as those done by Terry Tussey, but it is a significant improvement over the sharp rear corner of a standard frame. Mr. Harrison also fitted a set of nice ivory paper micarta grips that follow the rounded butt perfectly, covering the mainspring housing pin in the process. It makes for a much nicer carrying gun under a jacket, and saves the elbow from unnecessary ouchies. It also gives it a softer appearance somewhat reminiscent of a Colt .32, that whole retro thing again.

The one thing we did not touch (yet) is the original barrel, link, and bushing. It shoots quite nicely as is, and until such time as my shooting skills warrant a better barrel, it will serve. Of course in the event of some failure of the barrel, etc, I will likely improve to a higher grade of tube.

I have sooo many holsters here for a 1911 that it is hard to pick just one, but in a nod to Uncle Jeff I intend to give a long hoarded Yaqui slide a few spins around the block.

This whole exercise has served to point out something Rob mentioned recently, I now have a burning need to duplicate this firearm in an aluminum framed 1911. For some reason I am having hot flashes 'bout a two-tone Commander (black top and controls, silver frame) with the same grip safety and spur hammer as my larger steel version. It just never ends!

Sounds nice to me, and done just the way you want it. Pic's

have one if not BRACE yourself! and take several picking the best one. Please, no dirty toes and absolutely, positively, no Spiderman underwear! otherwise you'll just have to send that pistol to each one of us to ensure this is real and not vapor where. I'm first!:-D

I just confirmed my order for a 1911 38 Super with the Colt Custom Gun Shop. I have wanted a Super to rebuild for quite some time but just couldnt find one for a reasonable price so I bit the bullet and went for a Dancing Pony. I also like the old style 1911s. I specified a wide spur hammer, Flat m/s housing old style grip and thumb safety. I also specified a trigger job, checkered front strap, hi-hold cut and an enhanced reliability package, novac nite sights. The piece will be finished in Colt Royal Blue with Matt flats. The only glitch is the 220 day delivery time. Should be worth the wait.

A few things to add. This old piece of iron currently sports a 3 pound trigger pull that is sweet and without creep. Doug also throated the barrel and tuned the new extractor. It is no test of course, but three magazines of hardball out the back door of his shop last night functioned flawlessly.

The grips were modified grips meant to fit up to a S&A mainspring housing. To more accurately fit the frame, Harrison builds grips from scratch, and I have a set on order.

Rob,

If you happen to make it over to the "wet" side of Washington, let me know and I'll buy you lunch. While I can't butcher a steer for you, I'll be happy to shoot the bull a bit :-)

JD

That is funny!

This trip might take all summer! started out as a we'll drive through Colorado on the way back from Raton. Turned into we'll have to visit Yellow Stone to show our daughter . then since we're so close we should drop over to Soda Springs for a summer visit with Dick Thompson. and maybe over to Twin falls for a visit with some old friends and dang we can't miss out on the Elmer Keith display in Boise, maybe even buy JT lunch... It's pretty funny to me, Moscow got added, now Walla Walla and we'll be SO close to Seattle and friends there...We will see! I enjoy all the great folks I have met through the various versions of these boards.

If you get to the Seattle area, it would be great to see you

by JD, Western Washington, Wednesday, February 01, 2012, 16:00 (4679 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

If you do happen to get to the Seattle ares, please let me know. I'll buy you some of the best clam chowder and fish and chips you've ever had (If you like that kind of food..). We can shoot the bull and I can show off some of my "toys". If time allows, we might even be able to get out and do a little shooting too...

It would be a pleasure to have the chance to meet you in person, rather than just the couple of times I've spoke to you on the phone...
