Colt 1917 with shades of Skeeter and Dobe Grant.

by Jared, Saturday, September 14, 2013, 15:11 (4032 days ago)

Went to the gunshow this morning to try and kill some time, I haven't been to one in nearly a year. We were on the last aisle about to leave when I saw this. the guy had it built in the 70's on a 1917. It is still a .45 ACP, new barrel that the gunsmith turned down, looks like a Ruger front sight with material added to the top then the red insert installed. N frame rear sight milled in the top strap. He said he added a New Service target Trigger, and it has a nice DA action job, the SA is heavy but serviceable. Overall someone did a decent job on it. It isn't a Bowen but I paid less than a Used Glock sells for so don't think I did too bad.

Hubba Hubba! I'd have snagged it too.

I went to a tiny show here today, there were more vendors than attendees, and nothing worth buying.

I didn't see much money trading hands at all. Lots of tire kickers.

Not what I was expecting to bring home. I was excited, and the guy seemed to be happy that I could appreciate what it was.

Yeah I could see his face light up when I actually knew what it was. We talked about the revolver for at least 10 minutes.

Red Insert

by JLF @, Saturday, September 14, 2013, 18:35 (4032 days ago) @ Jared

Keep an eye on that insert, it doesn't have any metal to hold it like a dovetail does. 45acp isn't much of ride for the sight on a resolver, but you never know how well it's attatched.

Red Insert

by Jared, Saturday, September 14, 2013, 20:14 (4031 days ago) @ JLF

Yeah I was looking at that. It looked to be epoxied in. If It gets loose ill figure something out. It may look just as good without the insert kind of like a big TLA sight.

I had to do a double take whn I saw it in the case. The price seemed too low, I had been looking at over priced junk all day. I hope it shoots as good as it looks. The guy said he used a Lyman 200 gr SWC in Auto rim brass. We will see.

That really looks nice. Good fine....they are out there, just not easy to find and you got one !

I had pretty much given up finding anything. I tried to buy a nice 1903 Colt .32 ACP but the guy was too high on his price and wouldn't budge.

I like that...

I have one but its still original and too centimental to change but that looks like a fun shooter.

An original one would be great. I kick myself for not buying one when the price was still somewhat reasonable.

That is a beauty!

by Brian A, Saturday, September 14, 2013, 23:23 (4031 days ago) @ Jared

Generally prefer the S&W version, but that would definitely get my interest, great find!

Same here, this is my first large frame colt revolver. I have fairly large hands but it is amazing how small it makes a N frame feel after handling it for a while.

The Colt 1917 is the gun I was weened on...

by rob @, Sunday, September 15, 2013, 15:29 (4031 days ago) @ Jared

Might be why I have an affinity for what I call real guns, not pocket models:)

I grew up with them...

by Brian A, Monday, September 16, 2013, 01:07 (4030 days ago) @ Jared

My Dad had a 1917 and my Grandfather had a New Service 45 Colt. They are well-built and accurate, but not quite as user friendly for people with normal sized hands as the Smiths. I wear XL gloves and have a tough time getting a proper grip on them, while the N-frames are quite comfortable.

good on you!

I went to a show a couple of weeks back and saw a Model 28, not even pristeen, for $900. I refuse to even talk to people like that.

I know what you mean.

by Jared, Sunday, September 15, 2013, 08:36 (4031 days ago) @ jgt

One think I hate is when someone has a table full of stuff with no price on it. If they are that imbarresed on how much they are asking that they can't display it, I want no part of it.

Now if there is just one gun with no price on a table of reasonably priced items I will usually ask. The nice thing is I am well past the point of need,so if it isn't a good price I can just walk away.

I know what you mean.

by jgt, Monday, September 16, 2013, 08:43 (4030 days ago) @ Jared

Don't go to shows in San Antonio. A lot of the tables are intirely unmarked. I always pass them up so those shows have little to offer me. The good thing is at my age, I have already found most of the guns I wanted.

Only reason you got that...

by Charles, Sunday, September 15, 2013, 09:59 (4031 days ago) @ Jared

is it didn't pass my way first.

Only reason you got that...

by Jared, Sunday, September 15, 2013, 11:38 (4031 days ago) @ Charles

It was almost noon when I bought it. No telling how many people walked by the table that morning.

That is cool.

Not crazy about the red insert but the "theme" is flat out cool.
