Winchester 92

I pick up unusual brass for my brass collection. There was a guy at the range Friday night with a circa 1904 Winchester 92 in 25-20. I think that's the first time I've seen that cartridge. I have more guns than I can shoot, but that little Winchester was slick. (It even had an octagonal barrel, which I'm a sucker for!)

The 25/20 is a great cartridge with brass available from Starline, Rem, Win, etc. It makes for a great reloadable 22M and especially interesting with cast bullets. Marlin makes a dandy lil 1894CL rifle, plus SSK can make you a nice barrel as can several other barrel makers. It will not cost you an arm 'n a leg for such a barrel either. The ole Winchester '92's are a beautiful rifle and much sought after. However the 2 I've gotten to play with had worn out bores. I ran exact same loads through my Marlin and the 2 Winchesters and found an average of 450 to 500 fps less velocity than the Marlin. Even the TC barrel had 100 fps more fps. Accuracy was also affected..the ole Winchesters would only do 2.5" to 3" at 25 yds where the new Marlin could put 'em all into one hole. Maybe the new Winchester Company or the Italians will chamber a '92 in 25/20. I always thought Rossi would chamber their great lil '92 in it, but never did to my knowledge.

about 8-10 years ago i picked up a remington model 25 pump in 25wcf off the used rack at the local shop. outside was bad, inside, not great but it ran fine. used AA2015 and the speer jacketed 72 or 75gr fp, whichever it weighs. great combo. guy who owns it now is in love too! would like to find another m25 in 32wcf, sumday.

Great little cartridges, I have a fair amount of experience with both the 25/20 and 32/20. They are awesome small game and varmint cartridges with low noise and recoil. Historically they were also frequently used for medium game such as whitetail deer. They can be a bit finicky to reload for, but with care will give very satisfactory results with jacketed or cast bullets.
