Refinishing a Walnut stock

Picked up a Clackamas Kimber model 82 in 22lr last night. Looks like a Pre- Hunter Silhouette with a 21" SS fluted barrel.
Looks to have been stored in a broom closet and shot very litte.
The gloss/polly finish has lots of places they it is chipped/flaked off along with several small dings.
I'd like to strip off the polly finish, steam the dents and then give it a nice oil finish.
Question is, will the polyurithane or whatever laquer they use come off with a mild paint stripper and the the remaining stock take an oil finish?
I've finished several stocks with both Poly and Oil in the past, just never tried to go from one to the other.
Any and all suggestions appericiated.

I have had hit and miss luck with getting polyurathane off of a stock. I would likely call Kimber and ask what they recommend to get their stuff off. Absent that, testing an area with the chosen stripper and a Q-Tip would tell the tale. I have never had an issue with an oil finish not taking after stripping poly. Best wishes. Post a pic, sounds like a very nice find that should turn out well.

I would leave the original finish if you can. It will fill the grain and you can finish over it. Just tape off the checkering and spray it. Brownell's sells a really good oil finihs in an aresol can. Here is a link. I just used it to refinsh a CZ 22 hornet.

I saw a post on Rimfire Central discribing removing a poly finish, steaming the dents out, and finishing with an oil finish. The person used a citrus based remover and claimed it did the job. He was in the Remington section but there is a Kimber section also. I would ask in both. Good luck.

Thanks for the replys, I'll do more research as time allows.
