Unless one has experienced how quickly these deals play out they simply have no idea what it is like and of course the best way to experience it is through realistic training.
The trainer was right on about the need to go hands on and again unless one has trained in some kind of short range violent combative (not strip mall tae kwon do)they will be lost from the jump.
A good gunslinger school teaching this real world stuff is the Suarez International "0 to 5' gunfighting" class.
One thing that is initially startleing is how harsh the muzzle blast is coming of a target into your face when fired danger close like this. Try it believe it!
Those that shoot at the range enough to get "comfortable" with their sidearm will have no chance at all in this kind of encounter.
Good post, Rob and good work Jeff. Always remember it is "speed and violence of action" that gets to walk away.
Now get a couple of good quality airsoft guns and tear it up in the back yard.
It should go without saying that a pistol carried in the front pocket would put you at a disadvantage here.

A hammerless revolver in a jacket pocket would work just fine here.

I think the message here and really for all situations where a CCW are involved is you have to have a PLAN ahead of time. Certainly not specifics because of too many variables, but you have to have lines in the sand that if crossed have predetermined responces. And by god once you decide to do something you had better be 100% committed to that action.
Thise tight area ATMs are NOT a good bet.

I use a drive up truck in gear foot on the break head on a swivel front seat gun next to my leg. BUT Not ideal.

Jeff what you said is great and it was a very good vid. Having a plan is most important. FIRST defence is the hairs on the back of your neck. NEVER ignore them. JUST don't put yourself in that position. Someone follows me closely I leave or stand still make him make the move. Money is cheap next to your well being. When he said put in your code , tell him your code while walking away, leave your card in the machine if it gets you away, Tell him 2222 take what you want Im out of here. At the least you will get him off balance enough to make a mistake at best you get away. Don't think you must get your lb of flesh right away. Something else to remember is even if you are right in using self defence in ANY measure you will face the legal system, Large lawer fees and possable leagle action from realitives. If you are threatened with VIOLANCE I agree you should do what ever it takes but always look for the best outcome. If I found myself in that position and 200.00 got me out of it well it is a no brainer. You saying I wont do it is the second mistake in the scenario. What would he have done if you said OK just don't hurt me . then his focous is on the money. Yours on survival? J.Michael PS Don't be afraid to be rude to strangers in a public setting The bad guy invaded your personal space because he knew you would be polite. JMC

I will never use a walk-up ATM if anyone else is around, and will leave if someone comes up while I'm there. One other thing: when using a drive-up ATM, always pull VERY close to the machine, so that a person could not get between your car and the machine or building wall. This keeps anyone from approaching the driver's side door. If you can, scout the ATMs you use in daylight and note the avenues of approach for someone on foot, then watch those avenues whenever you use the machine.
The ATMs I use allow you to insert your card and them remove it immediately. always do that BEFORE entering your code. If there's a vehicle in line behind you, watch your mirrors. If anyone starts to get out of the vehicle, leave immediately. If you have already entered your code, just blast off anyway, They may get your money if they are quick enough to enter an amount before the machine times out, but you will escape.
Better yet, get your pocket money when the bank's open and don't use ATMs.
Interesting and informative.
