and a dowel as a plunger to speed load cartridges at CSA matches. this is for convenience at the loading table. Not hand to carry around. Get a butt cuff for 6 to 12 cartridges. you can keep your carbine topped off this way. The best I have used is made by Chance Shelton of Levergunleather.com I make a simpler version as well. I prefer 5 or 6 cartridges as much more than that really through s off the balance of the carbine.
cartridge loops worn on the belt on your strong side are also a good way to go. Like a single action keep loading, as soon as possible, as you shoot.

I made a buttcuff for mine as well and like it but it would be uncomfortable for a lefty! What about a drop or dump pouch worn on your belt? Used to be popular for cop belts but now you can find used ones for $5 pretty easy. Maybe you could build a buttcuff that has a dump pouch built into it so for your son it would be smoother on his cheek than open rounds. another handy trick for carrying .38 or .357 rounds in a jacket pocket is that they fit in an SKS stripper clip.

Years [decades?] ago someone offered a metal tube leveraction speed loader, that had a sliding tab down a slot in one side and a 'mouth' that caught on the loading gate opening. They were available with a Spencer rifle-type Civil War Quickloader carrier, that was a bigger carrier-tube in which you could insert a half dozen or so of the loaders in pre-drilled holes, sorta like an arrow quiver. IIRC it came with a sling and retainer cap?

A handy fella, such as hangs out here, could fab it out using caliber sized tubing, I suppose. There's no internal spring. However, I believe at the mouth there was a simple leaf spring that engaged the cartridge rims so they didn't just fall out of the tube as you handled it. Pushing on the sliding tab in it's slot overcame the leaf spring resistance and you could load as many or as few were needed.

Not real handy for all day carry, I suppose, but good storage and quick access to fifty-sixty or so rounds.

I did rig-up 'bullets in a carry sling', but it was heavier than than I thought it would be, and the swinging weight while aiming wasn't great either. For a while also used some Euro-milsurp leather belt box, with a brass peg and slotted tab top, which held nearly a full box of .357's, but about half that was plenty to be hanging there all day. Also tried makeshift bandoleers, but they get in the way more than I had imagined -- mebbe two of 'em crossed and fastened together on the chest Pancho Villa style might counter weight the slung-about effect a single one has

Maybe Mossberg will make a tactical lever action that takes M-16 and M-14 magazines.

I don't usually put this many in the loops. The gun's magazine holds nine, plus ten in the cuff, can't imagine a mild manner fellow such as myself would need more than that!

The reason I ordered a cuff with so many loops, is because I had a dream once where I was walking in the woods and suddenly I became surrounded by 19 bears. Fortunately, I woke up before anything happened. I ordered the cuff shortly after that. If it wasn't for that dream, I probably would have ordered just 5 or six loops. Now that I think about it, it looks like it would make a good club too.
