Hot weather concealed carry

by Fowler, Tuesday, July 16, 2013, 14:03 (4092 days ago)

Ok my uncle and I were discussing hot weather concealed carry. I am 40 and wear fairly baggy jeans and button up shirts that are never tucked in, pretty much year around. So I carry a full sized 1911 in a Milt Sparks in the pants holster and never have issues.

Every now and then I just slip a Smith snubbie into a leather pocket holster into my right front pocket and my pants are baggy enough no one ever notices.

Now my uncle wear Wranglers and tucks in a button up shirt everyday all year. When it is cold he simply wears a vest over it and carries a 1911. But summer is challenging, his pants are not butt hugging tight but they are tight enough that a snubbie in the pocket is A: very noticable, B: uncomfortible, C: too tight to get to the gun in a hurry should the need ever arise. So he doesnt feel it is a reasonable option.

He has tried tuckable in the pants holsters with his bobtail Commander 1911 but it was with at best so so results. The Jury is out on this option.

So what do you guys do who live in warmer climates? The idea if a plastic .380 is not what he likes but admits is better than not having a gun. Obviously everything is a comprimise but what is the reasonable balance here?

This setup even works with drawstring pants (!)

Pretty hard to beat, IMO, and I've tried a bunch of 'em. ;-)

Dress around the gun. If fashion or convention is more

important, then an ankle holster, unarmed or open carry will be his choices. I have seen average sized men hide N frames & Redhawks under an untucked shirt, it is the way to go in the hot summer months.

For some of us, at least, there's a lot more to it than that

Or maybe there's just a lot 'less' of us, I'm not sure which. ;-)

It's more of a mindset than anything else. One has to really

by Rob Leahy ⌂ @, Prescott, Arizona, Tuesday, July 16, 2013, 15:22 (4092 days ago) @ FOG

WANT to carry. For instance: Louis Awerbuck is slight of statue and manages a 1911 and a G19 at the same time, right and left 4 O'Clock carry. Sep 95 Mas Ayoob all 5'8" carried a 6" 829 under an untucked polo shirt. When I was a sales dog, and later a banker in Phoenix, AZ, the job dictated a white shirt tie and slacks for summer wear. I resorted to a J in the ankle, & pocket and 1911 in the brief case carry during the hottest months. As soon as it cooled enough to allow a jacket or vest I went back to my IWB 1911 carry. Thousands of my customers carry N frames and redhawks, 1911 and various plastic service sized plastic autos everyday all day all year...Because they WANT or NEED to.

That's your experience

by FOG, Tuesday, July 16, 2013, 15:33 (4092 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

Mine is different.

I could tell you I think you're wrong, and even why, but it wouldn't change a thing.

I will say this: If you want to go around in 100°+ HEAT all dressed up 'around your gun', that's your business.

Expecting others to, or denigrating them for not doing so, is pointless − And that's 'at best'. ;-)

Bill, I've been EXTREMELY happy with my Simply Rugged

"Cumberland" IWB. I carry a full sized 1911, with an appropriate belt, and it's the best system I've found, for me. I wasn't sold on the clips until I tried them... they work with Rob's design, period. AND they allow me to fine tune the positioning a lot easier than my various Sparks/Alessi/ etc etc holsters do, even the snap-around versions. The width of the holster and distance between clips make for comfortable, secure, and discreet carry.

What won't work with this system is thin/high rise/ translucent shirts, or certain patterns that accentuate the heel of the MSH. Your uncle's bobtail might not present that problem.

I am not saying that rig/weapon are ideal for me, all the time. But for how I dress and the situations into which I put myself, it works very well, most of the time.

When belt carry isn't appropriate, I make damn sure to have a bag or innocuous zipped case with me.

Ol' Rob knows his way around the block, for sure.

Deep South Texas Hot Carry

by Charles, Wednesday, July 17, 2013, 10:53 (4091 days ago) @ Fowler

I live in tropical South Texas on the border and my standard dress is cargo shorts, sandals and a pull over shirt. There will be less than two weeks a year when I can't dress like that comfortably. From May through October, it is beastly hot, beastly hot.

I carry a Glock 19 or 17 every time I leave the house. I use a belt slide holster on a stiff 1 1/2 belt. I just put on a light weight tropical button up shirt over what else I am wearing. I leave it unbuttoned like a very light jacket.

Nobody has spotted the pistol and nobody looks at me funny for my dress. The extra light weight shirt doesn't seem to make me hotter. Doing it this way, means I can carry whatever I want.

I live in the land of the Mexican Drug Thugs (Cartels) and I want a real gun on my side. If something happens, it will be because I am in the wrong place at the wrong time and it will be very nasty...very nasty. They are not that smart, all drugged up and don't care about collateral damage. They will most often kill everybody in sight to be certain they get who they want and leave no witnesses. They may get this old gringo, but that will be after a hell of a gun fight, with lots of their blood in the ground.

I also keep a Ruger Elsie Pea in my weak side front pocket, in case somebody grabs my strong hand. I can shoot them loose, or try to at least. Quite often I have a good stout Irish Blackthorn cane with me to boot. Getting hit upside the head with that is like getting hit with a length of re-bar. Several time with nuisance people (panhandlers) I have brought it up to "port arms" and given them a hard look right in the eyes. There is no need to say anything and they will decide to go elsewhere.

Exactly!

Hot weather concealed carry

by Catoosa, Wednesday, July 17, 2013, 15:39 (4091 days ago) @ Fowler

A lightweight, mesh yoke "fishing" shirt is the Tennessee equivalent of the guyabera(sp) shirt. You can wear one open or buttoned over a t-shirt even in HOT weather (like we got today!) and conceal most anything.

For most of my adult life I HATED a-line undershirts. The damm things always made me feel like a two-bit gangster in a B movie. However, when you gotta wear a big gun in an IWB holster, a cotton a-line undershirt will keep the gun from rubbing yer short ribs and is really no hotter than no shirt at all. I discovered that one summer when I had back problems and had to wear a back brace. A j-frame with a Barami Hip-Grip stuck in the heavy elastic/velcro band on the left side was my carry piece that summer.

Just having had surgery, makes it interesting.

Carrying during the summer month's can be a challenge. I can rust a blued gun in short order. I'm thankful for todays modern finishes that allow us to get by with a bit less worry in regards to that part.

Now onto the matter at hand. I had a stent put in this past week and had to make a doctor's visit on Tuesday. Typically, I carry a .380 in my front pocket. But given my current physical status (which ain't much even when I'm not under the weather) I wanted a 'Second Policy' let's say.

I've always worn my shirt tails tucked in. I went 'old school' and pulled my fanny pack rig out. I've had it for probably 15 years and haven't worn it in the past 13. I can't find a makers name on it, but it's a nice leather rig and held my 3" Model 65 perfectly. The extra pockets held a couple of speedloaders, speed strip, flashlight and cell phone. My back has had a catch in it lately. Nothing bad, but when it catches it can sure lock me up in a hurry. I decided as a nice touch to add a sword cane I have.

While the fanny pack isn't for everyone, it's still a very viable option.

Murphy
