I believe it's 'normal'
Perhaps better heard when 'clean', I'm not sure; I haven't heard an N-frame for a while.
To me, it always seemed to depend most on the stocks, with Goodyears winning The Ringing Contest.
Stainless also seemed more prone to ringing upon dry-firing, but that's probably because the blued and nickel guns were better dressed.
In K-frames, I have a well-used Model 617 that 'rings' when wearing Hogues but not with walnut.
FWIW, the 'flattest' sounding little snappers in the modern S&W lineup are probably the alloy J-frames; I don't think I ever heard one 'ring'.
