I meant to post these earlier but must have gotten side tracked. I picked up my new FAL Monday after work. It's a sweet feeling rifle! Heavy but solid feeling; I can't wait to get it to the range. Action feels nice and smooth, trigger is decent. Only bummer in the whole deal was that it was supposed to be threaded 5/8-24; same as my .30 cal can. Turned out to have left handed threads, I'm assuming the standard 9/16's lefty. I'm on the hunt for a thread adaptor...

It's got a railed fore end so I put a MagPul AFG on it. I need to get some ladder rail covers for a lower profile. It also has a DSA SA-58 railed top cover. So, I put a Vortex red/green dot on it as well as a Brunton 1.5-5x scope I swap out on one of my AR's. both optics sat too high, being set up for a flat top AR, but I liked them. I'm thinking for my eyes the low powered variable will be the best bet. Just need to get some lower, standard scope rings for it. I've also got the original hand guards and top cover if I want to go for the smooth look. I may try one of the Ergo pistol grips for it to lessen the steep grip angle on the standard FAL.

Anyways, here's a few pics I took after I picked it up.

Like a fool, I sold off all my surplus .308 after I sold my M-14's, so I only have match grade stuff around. Luckily I have a good amount of brass and just received about 600 150gr soft points I bought off of ARFcom. Just need a few pounds of Varget or 4895 and I'll be good to go for awhile!

Very nice

Thread adapter shouldn't be that hard to make if you can't find one.

Very nice

Thanks! I've got a couple of emails out to folk who specialize in thread adapters. I want to shoot it some before I get too involved, but if it shoots as old as it handles, she should be a keeper!!

Sweet looking FAL...

Hope it shoots better than it looks even. Mark is right, the thread adapter should not be too difficult for someone with a lathe to make, if one cannot be found readily. I have not done the math, but 9/16" and 5/8" are probably too close together to put one inside the other, so it will likely push your can out at least the length of the threads, but it would be very doable.

Yeah, I too think the threads would have to be kept seperate

by mcassill, Thursday, June 20, 2013, 11:00 (4119 days ago) @ Brian A

I already have an adapter drawn up in my head. I probably even have some 5/8" rod and a collet to fit :-)

Concentricity/perpendicularity is imperative

by John K., Thursday, June 20, 2013, 12:55 (4118 days ago) @ mcassill

Tolerance stackups from four threads - barrel, outside threads; adapter, inside threads; adapter, outside threads; and silencer, inside threads - can lead to a baffle strike. Shoulder seat perpendicularity (or whatever seating arrangement the can uses) is vital. The errors add up. The longer the can the higher the chances for a very bad day. :-( Also depends on how much leeway is built into the can via baffle clearance. I've seen 22lr baffle strikes and the only hint something was wrong was the point of impact changed three feet when the can was installed - I don't want to see a 308W baffle strike...

Just for cipherin', here's a list of specs put out by AAC for barrel threading - and note this is just for one male/female set of threads.

I'm sure Doug knows to check this before shooting, but had to mention the possible ramifications.

Thread adapters...

I've got a few of them.

Those are, from left, 9/16 to 1/2", 9/16" to 5/8", and 1/2" to 5/8.
My AC556 has 9/16" threads and I have a .22 conversion kit for it, so I can shoot my .22 can on it with the conversion or my .30 cal can on it when it's set up for .223. I've got the 1/2 to 5/8 so I can screw the .30 cal can onto a standard AR (i had my 18" AR threaded 5/8).

They also allow me to do funky stuff like this...

Yep, that's a 9" long stainless can rated for any .30 caliber hooked up to a cut down 3.5" Ruger MkII!! Silly and just slightly front heavy, but man, is it quiet!!

I've Lso gt a few end caps for my 9mm Thompson Machine Isis-9. It can use Gemtech multimount end caps so I've got a booster for semi auto pistols, a fixed cap for carbines, 5/8" fixed cap so I can shoot it on my .300 blackout with subsonics and one that replaces the barrel nut on my SBR Uzi.

I'm all about getting the most (or least) bang for my buck!

Yep, that is pretty much how they looked in my mind...

Looks like you all already pretty well up to speed with what it will take to do what you want. Sure looks like fun.

for me at least I need to mount the optics dead flat to the receiver.

Yeah, I need to get it as low as I can and still clear the ocular bell. I'll slap it on there in the AR mount simply because that scope/mount is already sighted in for my 18" AR and I don't want to mess it up if its not going to live on the FAL permanently.

Here is is with the scope in the AR mount:

I may still need some sort of riser. I've got a stock pack that'll give me a little bit of rise and info need more, I'll call on this joker I know who works with this funky thermo-forming polymer stuff and see if he can't whip up and adjustable set up.

Oh, I found a leatherwood Hi-Lux 1-4x scope of love to put on it. They're asking $250, which is a good bit off of retail.

for me at least...

with an optic mounted low over the DSA top rail the milspec stock works just fine without add-ons.

I always thought a .358 Win FAL would be slick. NM

I thought the same about the M-14 when I was playing with them. The Canadians can still get the norinco M-14's pretty cheap. I think a shorter, 16-18" version with a red dot would be a great piggie gun!!

A .358 works....
