Guns that shouldn't have 'worked' but did

by FOG, Saturday, June 08, 2013, 12:28 (4190 days ago)

I've never owned a 6-inch 1911, but I did once have a copy of the 'infamous' AMT Longslide with a 7-inch barrel, and it shot like a laser.

S-e-e-e-riously. :-D

In addition, while I'm sure it did at least once, I honestly don't recall the Longslide ever 'jamming'. In fact, it was probably the most 'popular' gun in my collection during the time I owned it: EVERYBODY wanted to shoot it − and EVERYBODY did. If the pistol had been prone to misfeeding, I'm pretty sure I'd remember it.

It also came with a very nice, crisp trigger pull, plus it was one of the later guns with the Millett rear sight. Neither was any impediment on the range, that's for sure.

One thing about that trigger, though: One day, I detail-stripped the pistol and discovered one leg of the sear had departed the scene. Since I bought the gun NIB from a dealer, this was apparently an OEM 'feature'.

I've had other guns like it over the years, but for a 'cheapie' with a 'bad' reputation, my AMT Longlide was truly remarkable. Remembering it almost makes me wish I still had it.

Almost. ;-)

Guns that shouldn't have 'worked' but did

I've got two AMT 7" 45 ACP's right now that I've had since the late 70's and really like them. Also had a 7" 10mm for many years but a friend talked me out it last year. None ever gave me a problem until a couple of months ago. One of the barrels cracked on the right side of the chamber and finding a replacement is proving to be a real problem. Last one I saw for sale was $500 NIB, should have bought it.

Oh, I've been lookin' at 'em alright.

A lot. :-D

On a replacement barrel, some might scoff, but I'd probably order one from a 'custom' barrel maker such as Bar-Sto. (I see they don't list anything longer than 6' on their website, but a phone call might turn up addtional info.)

Another option would be searching eBay & GunBroker more or less every day until you find one. (You can also have them notify you by email, but I prefer the manual method.)

Either way, it's only money. :-D Or time...

I've been on backorder with them for months and they don't have an estimated "available" date. Thanks for the suggestion.

AMT Longlide Barrel: Another option

by FOG, Saturday, June 08, 2013, 13:19 (4190 days ago) @ Cherokee

IGB Austria lists 16-inch 1911 barrels for $310.50.

Pricey, yes, but unlike many other sites, they show them IN STOCK.

Of course, you would 'have' to cut it to length...Or maybe you wouldn't.

HTH :-)

Hardballer.

After the S&W stainless line hit the stores, we Cooperites began howling for a stainless 1911. Nobody expected Colt to do squat, and they didn't. Randall and Detonics popped up, but they were too pricey for working folks. Then AMT hit with the Hardballer, and we were saved. I spent the rent to glom one of the first ones shipped. It wouldn't feed hardball, and felt like it was full of sand. So I went to work on it. I polished every surface that rubbed another surface, and it started feeding halfassed, and only hardball. So began a project. I would do another trick in the bag, and go shoot it, and it would get better, then another trick, and more improvement. One day I hit the magic combo of tricks, and it never jammed another round for the many years I owned it. It fed everything, and was extremely accurate, once I replaced the silly roll pin in the rear sight with a solid pin.

It was my go-to peestol for many years until I got too big for my britches, and sold it for peanuts to buy some fancy label. Most of what I learned about 1911 tinkering came from that gun that wouldn't feed anything out of the box.

Sounds exactly like the experience with my AMT 10mm Javelina. Bought brand new around 1980 for $200 hard earned dollars. Traveled 70 miles to the range and it would not put two consecutive rounds down range without a jam. Brought my brand new 1911 parts kit home and being the stubborn old Missouri pig farmer that I am got to work. Same as you, I learned everything I know about making a 1911 run on that gun. Got it to 90% functional but could get it no farther. Finally bought one of them "new" Lee factory crimp dies in 10mm, seems it had a rather tight chamber. Voila 100% function and still the most accurate 1911 I own. Even won a second place Louisiana state championship USPSA match with it in 82.

My Javelina never gave me a problem, SN 00126. First shot from the box in 1989 with Norma ammo was absolute dead center at 25 yd and it continued to perform like that with factory and primariy with my jacketed and cast loads until I sold it to my friend last year.

Just for the record (lol)

On the one hand, I didn't mean to 'pick on' AMT.

On the other, it seems interesting it seemed that way.

Or something like that.
