....but it's even better -- the whole concert from one of my all-time favorite guitarists.

SRV was a MONSTER geetar player. One of the greatest...

...IMO, way better than Clappner.

Thanks for the link!

Working for it.

Stevie Ray got it in his head early that bigger strings gave him more tone, which ain't true on a solid body electric. For all his playing years, he used 13s! With his playing style, by the time he died, his hands were a wreck, and his playing years were numbered. By contrast, Billy Gibbons knows a little about tone himself, and he uses 7s.:)

He used heavier gauge strings.....

...and down-tuned half a step to lower string tension so he could do those monster bends he did without breaking strings. His tone was more a reflection of those early Fender pickups, and a combination of 2 early Fender amps, with an early Marshall combo, and a Leslie speaker box (and of course a Vox wah-wah pedal).

Kinda sorta.

Most everybody tunes down a half step these days to make it easier on the vocalists and to discourage drunken harmonica players from asking to sit in. And string bends are limited by the width of the fretboard, everybody bends their strings to the max. It's a heck of a lot easier with 9s than it is with 13s, which is what was wrecking Stevie Ray's hands.

...I have only just begun to waste my day!

Check out this acoustic set - as a 12-string guy myself, the first tune blows me away:

Thanks for posting that!

I had seen some of the Joe Satriani stuff before, but I didn't realize that he was sharing the stage with Stevie Ray.

I am reminded of a time when I lived back in Austin -- this would have been about 1980 or so -- and Stevie Ray got together to do a one-off acoustic duet with his brother Jimmy Vaughn. As soon as I heard about it, I hopped on my bicycle and rode over to the restaurant they were doing it in. Unfortunately, it was already filled to capacity and the waiting line to get in stretched around the block. It was rumored that both of them were doing "non-typical" things for them, like playing 12-string, playing slide, Dobro, etc., and that they played for several hours, doing old traditonal country blues, early rock-a-billy, spontaneous jams, etc. But sadly, all I can do is report on the rumors I heard because I never got inside to hear what they actually played....:-(

Wish I'd gotten to see SRV live. (nm)

I was fortunate....

I lived in Austin from 1978 to 1982, and got to watch SRV break out. I saw him play about a dozen times, mostly in neighborhood bar type settings (and a couple of times in much larger venues). He was a very personable guy.

SRVs Live at El Mocamco show is a keeper as well, I had to buy a DVD copy of it after checking it out from the library some years ago.

I think he just about empties his bag of tricks in this performance!
