Still more on 4" 1911 recoil systems: Reverse plugs

Whether the Reverse Plug that comes with the Wilson Flat-Wire Recoil Spring Kit will fit a Springfield Champion has been bugging me ever since the general subject came up.

To me, it looks like the flanged portion might be a little long, which I think might in turn require more relief in the slide for the part to fit.

This worry was at once compounded and relieved this morning when I more or less stumbled upon another source for this type of kit: Springfield (!) 4" Guide Rod & Spring Kit @ EGW

I thought the 'collar' on a Springfield reverse plug might be shorter than it is on the Wilson, and it looks like it is.

Hope this isn't too late to help. :-(

Not too late.

SA has yet to reply. Brian's pastime turns to finny pursuits as the weather warms.

I passed on this info and he told me to tell you "Thank you."

That's a relief

First of all, you and Brian are most welcome.

Too bad that Springfield hasn't been more responsive. EGW has an excellent reputation, so it's another option at least.

Tell Brian, "Good luck!"

I hope things work out for him and his Champion. :-)

As sent to me....

Subject: RE: Question regarding compact 1911 recoil kit

Brian,

Our kit will solve your issues. We have seen on a few Champions that the guide rod head will need to be ground flush so that the gun will go into battery. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Best regards,
Jim

Subject: Question regarding compact 1911 recoil kit

Greetings,

My Springfield Armory 1911 .45ACP "Champion" model is acting up & I am looking for a replacement recoil assembly kit. A friend recommended your kit.

The issue is that I bought this firearm used, about 10 years old, and the recoil spring was getting weak & had a compression-set to it. It was starting to slow down & not return to battery after fewer rounds between cleanings.

I replaced the recoil spring only, but then the slide started hanging up on the lip of the full length guide rod tip when returning to battery, preventing the chamber from closing, due to misalignment during recoil cycling..

Will your kit solve this problem? My firearm is the 4 inch barrel "commander" length.

Springfield 4" Guide Rod & Spring Kit
Product ID : 10504

The kit appears visibly different than the OEM design that has a dual spring assembly, I am unsure if it will work properly.

Thank you,

Brian Mann

I appreciate the update

I would probably follow EGW's lead on this, particularly with regard to the Guide Rod and Reverse Plug.

The often maligned but nonetheless 'correct' FLGR is, IMO, positively indicated for 4-inch 1911s, and I'm sure they can satisfactorily address any other issues that might arise with their 'kit'.

No doubt redundant, but I would also recommend keeping Wolff in mind for quality replacement recoil springs for the 4-inch 1911, whether Springfield, Kimber, or another brand.

HTH :-)

Agree about the FLGR on on the 4" and shorter guns.
