"But if I ever see a guy shorten a barrel with a hacksaw, knock off the sharp edges with a file and crown it with an RCBS case mouth chamfering tool,.."
Guilty. I really didn't think anyone saw me do it.
I did it one time though, exactly as described right down to the RCBS chamfering tool. I did file the end as square as eyeball measurement would allow. It was an old, much neglected, 742 Jam-a-matic so there was nothing to lose. It accounted for several deer before giving up the ghost.

With the possible exception of the RCBS Chamfering Tool, that is the correct way to do the job using hand tools:
Gunsmithing - How to Shorten and Recrown a Rifle Barrel with Hand Tools (YouTube Video)
If you wonder how I know about this video, let's just say I still have mine.
My RCBS Chamfering Tool, that is.

That's a good one. Have ole 760 in '06...never seen the need for a 742.

I fought the 740 and 742 at different times... the bugs were pretty well worked out in the 7400. We had one around here for years and it ate hat-fulls of my 'o6 reloads with nary a complaint.

Even on the 760 I have to use the small base '06 dies. Had a nice Grade II BAR '06 for awhile, nary a jam with that thing....and it was deadnuts accurate too.
