Anyone remember ALF, Tinker and Doc from the old days?
by Otony, Sunday, April 14, 2013, 21:55 (4244 days ago)
The three of them just crossed my mind, what ever became of those fellows?
Last I heard Tinker and ALF were hanging out at the Savage 24 forum, but that was many moons ago.
I heard that Doc broke up with his wife and moved to another state. Used to get the occasional email from him, but that dried up.
Boy, I think back to those days fondly at times. Remember when I was trying to find some of us badges engraved Pistol Packing Preachers. Ended up being a little too spendy for some (me included) so that project sort of dried up on the vine, as it were.
Then there was the limited run of Rugers made up for the group by Reeder, followed by the consolation Rugers by Clements. I foolishly sold mine a few years back to another forum member. I can sure be dumb at times.....

I hear from Doc occasionally. Wrote to Tinker at an old address a year or so back and he answered. Haven't heard from Alf since, oh, '06 or so...
Yep...
by Otony, Sunday, April 14, 2013, 22:07 (4244 days ago) @ Paul
Now that I think on it, there was Doc O'Meara and Doc Hudson. I was referring to Hudson, but O'Meara is missed as well.
I sold that Clements Bisley to Scott Kolar for a pittance, sigh.
ALF/Lance was in touch with me sometime between 2006 and 2009, but nothing since then.
For that matter, I notice that Caz has almost completely dropped out of sight here.

I was wondering the same thing. Doc is the only one I knew, met him at a meet in Evansville, IN many Moons ago. He was in the area because his Wife was getting her Doctorate at IU in Bloomington. Jim Taylor set up the meet and greet. I corresponded with Doc a bit after that, then lost track of him. His Wife needed her Doctorate to manage a Jr. College, IIRC in was in MS. Any body heard from him?

by cas, Monday, April 15, 2013, 00:40 (4244 days ago) @ Otony
That was 2007ish. Haven't heard from them since.
The forum had taken an "off topic" turn where 98% of what was discussed was anything but Savage model 24's. It had driven off most/all the people who were there for the original purpose of the forum, including causing Messieurs Church and Dunn, to lose interest in their own forum.
They gave it to me, and in order to save the forum I decided to be the bad guy and re-steer the forum back on topic. No more off topic stuff. That didn't go over well with Doc H. , nor Lance I don't believe and they faded away. (well Lance faded, Doc made a declaration of exit and did so).
CSA I & II
by JLF , Monday, April 15, 2013, 01:09 (4244 days ago) @ Otony
The first and second were held in Athens, Tx. Alf was there, and Doc Hudson did the cooking. Lewis Ballard "The Kilted Cossack" remained a friend for years, then moved from Houston to Amarillo, and vaporized. Chris Keck, who signed on as "the boys from the Broken Nose ranch", introduced me to the original Sixgunner board, and invited me to the first CSA. He's still in Nocona, and I hear from him on occasion. An old coot from Arkysaw named Tom sump'nuther showed up and skinned me out of some nice sixguns. The empty onion sacks should have been my first warning...

Jack,
CSA I was held at a little range just outside of Greenville, MS. Met a lot of good folks for the first time there.
The first two people to walk up to me and Kathy at the motel and introduce themselves was Jim Taylor and Charlie Smith. My how time flies.

Lynette and I ended up on the firing line between Jack, Joe, and Craig Mattingly and Jimmy P. It was Sept 2000, as I recall and BLISTERING hot. Around 105deg, 100% humimdity and the shooting line had a low tin roof.
Did not know that......
by Otony, Monday, April 15, 2013, 08:03 (4244 days ago) @ JLF
.......Lewis "Kid Cossack" Ballard had moved to Amarillo. We had a spectacular falling out a few years back, unfortunately. Haven't spoken since. Good luck to him, he seemed mired in a swamp of indecision for many years. I wish him the best, whatever he is doing.
You all might recall when he and I were closer that I was using the handle "Kid Cassock". We had a few things in common, not the least of which both our wives are Russian, his from Kazakhstan, mine from Saint Petersburg. I am also godfather to his two oldest girls, and Lewis himself, but church didn't seem to enter into his sphere much in the long run.
I dimly recall a gal from the early days, a cowgirl from the Dakotas? She was pretty active, early on. And of course our friend from Buffalo Bore, and John Taffin and Jim Taylor. AK Church and I still emule upon occasion. So many others, I truly enjoyed those times!
What was the timeline of forums we were all involved with? Just before Sixgunner, John had one that sort of morphed from some earlier version. Then Sixgunner died, to be replaced by Joel's version? I am sure I have the timeline and names wrong......
Otony
Don't know about timeline, but the various iterations...
by Paul , Monday, April 15, 2013, 08:16 (4244 days ago) @ Otony
are roughly:
earp.com
sixguns.com/Campfire
Sixgunner.com/forum
"New and Improved" sixgunner.com/forum
Gordboard forum/sixshootercommunity.com
leverguns.com/leverguns.sixgunner.com
levergunscommunity.com
sixshootercommunity.com/forum
If I were more ambitious I could take a look at the date of registration of sixshootercommunity.com and levergunscommunity.com to put tentative dates for the beginning of those. Plus, I'm probably missing quite a bit. For example, the Savage 24 forum, rugerowners, singleactions and ???
A bit of clarification on the "Gord Board" and "sixshootercommunity". Gordon in NM set up the "punkin board" when it seemed like the new owner of Sixgunner.com was going to make what were considered "drastic changes" and invited a few of us to congregate there. When the original sixgunner forum was changed to black on black to force folks to the new forum Gord threw the doors open and the rest is history. I set up sixshootercommunity.com (although at first I registered sixgunnercommunity, but to avoid conflict changed to the current one)as a "doorway" to the forum, something easier to remember than "disc.sewer.com/forum/#######" or whatever the string looked like. When the leverguns forum bit a virus or whatever happened then it was easy to setup the levergunscommunity and dedicate it to being a forum loosely linked to leverguns.com. We also have pumprifle.org which was set up by Bruce Hamlin a couple years back.
And over the years folks have come and gone and some have gone and drifted back and others have faded into history. But there's still a few of us "good ol' boys" who have been hangin' together for almost a decade and a half in the virtual world.

There was another that was around a short while and seemed local (or friends with) Buck Elliot. Can't remember her name or handle.
Then Mellie, Church's girl.
Remember Richard Easley and his terrible jokes? Died unexpectedly on the operating table during a heart cath in '03.
Board iterations - lessee, this one, preceded by Gordon's disc.server board, preceeded by Joel's (paralleled by Jim's old board for a while), preceeded by Jim Taylor disc.server boards, preceeded by the Wyatt Earp board. JT's disc.server board paralleled Jim's early board. Sure has changed over time. Doc Hudson had a website in the early days - it was one long page of Q&A. My earliest memories of the sequence date to somewhere around '97, but I may be off a year either way. Paco & Jim started Leverguns in parallel some years back.
We had a discussion once about the old days, and IIRC rob said he remembered posting the first post on Wyatt's board.

Boy your memory is better than mine by a longshot (handgun) but the names you mention sure bring back a lot of memories. Yep, Jim Taylor was instrumental in setting up a lot of stuff. Set up my first website, L.E. Jurras& Assoc several years back. Was fun for awhile, then I found it took all my time, not allowing any for work. After a couple years of e-mailing and conversing with Buck Elliot finally met him in Cody, WY at a Linebaugh seminar. Buck was the Gentleman I had come to believe he was from the internet. Met up at the Irma Hotel in Cody. A true Gentleman
Who was the Cowgirl mentioned above, read her posts but never conversed.

I can't call his name right now... but he believed the 44mag Super Redhawk was the end-all of handgun development. Loaded heavy bullets seated long to high pressure. Last I remember, he got out of guns and into racing.

He always seemed to be trying to pick a fight, but perhaps that was just the way he came across to me. His other hobby was building racing engines and it slowly morphed into his primary hobby. Then one day he never came back.
Cannon would remember all of this and likely have pictures and dates.

Around from the early days of Freedom Arms and worked on a project to build a 454 lever gun with Freedom Arms. Very interesting stuff. IIRC he was working on building his own line of lever guns last I heard from him. I wonder if that went anywhere. There is a company now that builds very nice high end, high power lever guns now but I can't remember the company name.

by Paul , Monday, April 15, 2013, 08:40 (4244 days ago) @ lee jurras
Joel had big plans for commercializing the website. But apparently life and ??? got in the way and the last I checked the domain is simply parked. I've done my best to keep some of the stuff going, but not for commercial reasons. The community here funds the sites and their hosting by a yearly drive. Perhaps someday we'll manage to pick up sixgunner.com too. It'd be interesting to get some of the old articles back up on the 'net where folks could access them easier.
Forgot to mention in an earlier post, milesfortis.com. It's now a part of the "community" sites/forum. Last year we had some hackers hit us on a couple of the sites and I've not had time to get everything back up.

That Doc Hudson was sure a character, he showed up for dinner in his kilt, you'd a thought he was here for the highland games. Nice enough fella though, and so's his wife; ex-wife I guess now, from what ya'll say.
Anyone remember ALF, Tinker and Doc from the old days?

Yeah, Tinker's last association with this series of boards was the day before Bush was elected the first time. Remember it well. Still have a couple of the Sixgunner shirts from the group buy he managed. Moved to the Savage board and vanished.
Alf, in all his iterations, eventually moved to the Savage board and vanished.
Doc Hudson was slowly fading to the Savage and Leverguns board and then vanished from here. Last I heard, he and Marcie had divorced and he moved back to Brantley, AL to be near his mother - his dad died around 10yrs ago and she was alone. Haven't heard from him in years.

AKC and I correspond occasionally. Saw him last fall with mcassill. I believe he hunts with Jhenry/Hiram in the fall. He is still AK Church in every way.
ALF/Lance and I traded load data for .32-20 for his B-53 and he fufilled a dream and bought a Sako in .375H&H so there was more load exchange. That was a couple years back and I haven't heard much since.
Reading through the lists of names sure brought back a lot of memories. This is nearly the only forum I frequent anymore. Occasional forays into others seeking information on one thing or another but always here.
And, like Rob, I have also learned an awful lot about being a better man and am eternally grateful.
