Call me a wuss, dirty, or a wimp. I'll still shoot you if you try to harm me. If I can't use a gun, a (fill in the blank) will do. I don't equate self defense with being macho. It is survival. Every dyed-in-the-wool, anti-gun, left winger I have talked to that was willing to talk honestly about guns, ends up confessing that if they had a gun they would use it on somebody just because they were mad or didn't like the person. So, they think deep down the rest of us are like them.
