It's a myth
On a larger and/or higher-resolution screen, you can clearly see the "44 MAGNUM" stamp on the side of the barrel in the final scene.
The story of how S&W more or less 'scrambled' to provide the original Dirty Harry set with a Model 29 is also well documented.
