Krag questions as distraction

New Krag carbine is nifty. I haven't seen another like it, but probably haven't been paying attention.

I had looked forward to bringing it to CSA for opinions, but our situation changed.

So:

Action is original-ish. Trigger, at second stage, is heavy but breaks relatively cleanly. However, it also pulls the bolt downward, toward the sear. I suspect it's a geometry question, and have requested a copy of Brophy's "Krag" book for diagrams. Is this a situation you have seen previously?

Also:

Rear sights are pedestal-mountain folding leaf, adjustable blade types. Front is an ill-fitted/fitting Lyman bead type, soon to be replaced, but by what? I'm not anti-bead, per se, but do favor a flat front. I looked at the NEGC fronts, but they are cut for the matching ramps, rather than a standard dovetail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

872 is en route, as are some of Montana Bullet's finest. Tonight I'll look for brass.

Obviously, we are in the middle of some genuine weirdness, but I hope to have this rifle running soon, and to hunt with it this year.

Welcome to the Krag!

It does sound like a bit of a hooked surface on the sear; mine didn't do that. I just put a bit weaker spring in the trigger and lightly/carefully stoned the surfaces. It is still a two stage, of course, but entirely serviceable.

The sights on mine are Lyman banded ramp front and Lyman 48K rear - a lot to recommend there, but they must be found on ebay or similar.

WC872 is the ticket for cast - Charles tipped me off to that, and I have never tried anything else since it works so perfectly well. IIRC it takes 50grs of WC872 to fill the case to the base of a 220gr Lyman 311284. Depending on barrel length and particular rifle, that should give you 1700-1800fps. It will turn over the 600yd rams with regularity. Or a doe at 50yds... I REALLY like the Krag.

Brian, do NOT look at John's pictures.

I'm warning you. It will only lead to madness and you will stare at your Krag for hours on end imagining what it might be...

If you have already done so, it's too late. You're a goner...

You are, however, not alone.

And John, if you haven't figured it out already, I have lust in my heart for that rifle. I will build one along those lines one day...at least as best as I am able.

Ooooh, that's a nice one

Thx for the suggestions. That load sounds just right.

Details on builds as suggested by you, Charles, and Harry O influenced my choice, although this one is set up with a short barrel and a schnabel ended full length stock. Someone put a bit of thought into its build.
