The Gun & Ammo Famine of 2013

“The saddest aspect of this is that the ‘government’ hasn’t outlawed anything! We are doing this to ourselves- and the situation can only get worse, until supply catches up with demand.”

The Gun & Ammo Famine of 2013 Govt throwing gas on the fire
by Gila Jorge, Sunday, February 10, 2013, 20:15 (4306 days ago) @ Sarge
the government is exabercating this shortage by overloading the ammo conpany's with government orders which take priority and thereby keep ammo out of the hands of the populace they want to dominate....meanwhile preparing for Civil War against us...and their efforts to disarm us entirely. Damndable situation or circumstance...
I suspect there is an unpublished Admin Order...

directing alphabet agencies to order 5-10 years worth of ammo while the shortage is at its worst. At least, they are exacerbating the situation.
As to 'filling gov't orders first', we just ordered a simple thousand rounds of Federal HST pistol ammo and four Sig 556 rifles for our little PD. Don't have a clue when we'll see any of them... we are back-ordered out the wazoo, too.
I found the following regarding DHS ammo orders...

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2012/03/30/why-is-homeland-security-buying-450-million-...
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has awarded defense contractor ATK with an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement for .40 caliber hollow point ammunition. According to an official ATK press release, U.S. agents will receive a maximum of 450 million rounds over a five-year period.
The following is an excerpt from the press release:
ATK announced that it is being awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (DHS, ICE) for .40 caliber ammunition. This contract features a base of 12 months, includes four option years, and will have a maximum volume of 450 million rounds.
ATK was the incumbent and won the contract with its HST bullet, which has proven itself in the field. [...]
“We are proud to extend our track record as the prime supplier of .40 caliber duty ammunition for DHS, ICE,” said Ron Johnson, President of ATK’s Security and Sporting group.
The hollow point, of course, features a pitted or hollow tip intended to expand upon entering its target. ATK says its ammunition is “engineered for 100-percent weight retention, limits collateral damage, and avoids over-penetration” — all hallmarks of the hollow point.
This is not the first time DHS has placed such an order, however. In 2009, it signed a contract with Winchester for the procurement of 200 million hollow points.
The order may seem unusually high, but gun experts I talked to said it is not necessarily unusual and simply reflects a long-running practice by DHS and law enforcement agencies to use any remaining budget surplus on items routinely used and that would not be called into question. The idea being that if an agency does not use its entire budget in expenditures, the government will lower its budget the following year.
On the other hand, the decreased retail availability for hollow points does drive up demand, and hence price for such ammunition. Whether the consequence is an intended one, remains to be seen.
DHS is also buying 10 million worth of 223 ammo from Federal

The federal govt has helped the 223 and 40 ammo dry up by buyinga bunch for the Dept of Homeland Security and the VA (357 too I think).
This is not a bad thing ...

It has certainly sparked one hell of a lot of gun sales, that's for sure.
Around here, .40 is plentiful and relatively cheap.

My anecdotal observation is that prices have peaked on mags and ammo for now. The last 2 shows have had plenty of each on the tables with few takers. The market has been saturated. Prices will come down, just not as far as before.
I'm into 7.62 Nagant

They aren't beating the doors down and using up bandwith buying it. When I go to the ammo sites. I look for the obscure and its there, I might have a rifle/handgun for it.
Still have the nines, fortys, forty-fives and plenty of 22 and capnball to see me through all this. I just wont be blasting it away like there is no end to the supply.
This will give my time to tinker with the Nagant
Bob
That's OK. Last I checked...

I had a forty-three roller as a kid and a beer sack full of old green BP ammo, which I promptly expended shooting huge icicles off the bluffs of the local rock quarry. Miss that old gun!
Around here the odd stuff is plentiful

.32 S&W? 10mm Auto? Buy all you want. 40 Smith isn't that hard to find either, for that matter.
And 45-70 seems to be available as well...

In my Marlin Guide Gun it's handy and shoots through stuff pretty good;)
Amen Sarge.

Amen.
Good article. In 1994, I decided I would never again get caught out. I started squirreling away primers, powder, brass and bullets. This was not an idea original to me...I just listened to others and followed along. If I curtail my shooting habits a bit, I'm pretty sure I can go to my grave without spending another dime. My intent is to leave a "mess" for my kids.
That's a good plan...

I'm pretty good on .357, 44 Mag, 45-70 and 30-06. Decent stash of ACP's but I'm gonna stockpile as much 45 ACP and components I can get my hands on as well as .223 for the rest of my natural born life!

Funny thing about shortages. Seems many industries will find a way to increase their production if it is profitable to do so. I would not be too surprised if one of the big makers either adds to present facilities or goes overseas to get some one who fill the void. It has happened in the past. However I suspect we will a general increase in prices of all ammo and components even if the shortage ends. Whatever people are willing to pay. Just my take. Good day to all.

Today I rationed myself 30 rounds of Tula .40 FMJ for some skill maintenance with the Glock 23, at 15 and 25 yards. The targets were a particularly unreliable old range stapler, an empty shaving cream can (Old Spice Original, of course) and some 6" falling plates. I only missed the plates once, a product of 'riding the reset' too hard and a too short front sight I should have replaced sooner. With the price and scarcity of ammo these days, a man has to make every shot count.
What? Is the magazine not on the shelves any more?

Haven't you heard? obama is banning them too...

They talked about banning all shooting subject magazines/books...

Playboy but would not carry gun magazines. Actually I was aware of the UK. I am surprised Bloomberg hasn't already tried it in New York City.
