My Urologist informed me this AM that I had a high grade Cancer of the Prostate.
Don't know what high grade means, but I got the Cancer of the Prostate part. Cheers LEJ:-(

It can absolutely be beaten. Two lodge brothers (father and son) both beat it within two years from each other. It was a chore, but they prevailed.

Sorry Lee, will keep you in prayers

Bummer news for me

by Art @, Littleton, Colorado, Thursday, January 31, 2013, 19:48 (4316 days ago) @ lee jurras

Very sorry to hear this. I had a biopsy earlier this year that was negative but before I had the results I had a hart to hart with the Doc and he explained many of the new procedures from cyber knife to the surgery using the robot. Be encouraged that great strides have been made with prostate cancer. We need good people like you to stay around.

You have my prayers.

Cancer, shmanser, as long as you have your health...

by pokynojoe, Friday, February 01, 2013, 08:45 (4316 days ago) @ lee jurras

All kidding aside, join the club. I too am a member of the "world" of Gleason scores, proton radiation, regular radiation, surgery, do nothing, lions and tigers and bears Oh my! So many choices.

I'm sure you already know this, but from the stage you describe (i.e. "High Grade"), you're probably going to have to have a bone scan. Once that's clear, and it will be, (just another test to "line" the doctors pockets), then you'll have to make a decision, which treatment course to follow.

As it happens, It's looking like I chose wrongly. So I guess if I were you, I wouldn't listen to a word I say. However, the treatment that I wanted, my insurance wouldn't pay for, so my choices were limited anyway. If my insurance would have coughed up the dough, I would have chosen to have Proton radiation therapy, everything I've read, shows it to be the "bees knees" if you will, when it comes to cancer treatment.

At your age, I assume you have medicare, so, not to worry, it will pay for any course of treatment you select. You live in Texas, I believe, so you also have access to cutting edge treatment, and arguably some of the best medical facilities in the world. I live in Appalachia, with no money, questionable medical facilities, and crappy insurance. Many around here that I personally know that have been diagnosed with cancers end up going to M.D. Andersen in Houston. Five of my neighbors that work at Oak Ridge National Labs have been diagnosed with different cancers and that's were they go, but of course, the government is paying for their treatment.

If it sounds like I'm bitter, I'm really not. And my diagnosis was really no surprise to me. My father had it, uncles had it, heck even male dogs I've owned get it, so its kind of all around me.

Looking back, I realize now, that I was too cavalier about the whole process, but I'm basically a dumb ass, you're a smart guy, you won't make the same mistakes I did.

Good luck, and if I can be of any assistance as you journey through the process, let me know.

Oh, just one last thing, to keep in mind. My experience was that in meeting with the various and sundry specialists, before choosing a course of treatment, was that they all had an "agenda." But that may just be particular to the doctors around here, whom I'm sure wouldn't be practicing in this "jerk-water" town, if they actually graduated from an accredited medical school.

Prayers are said for you..

by Charles, Friday, February 01, 2013, 09:04 (4316 days ago) @ lee jurras

Our prayers will be with you Lee.

Dear Lee, to many of us, you are 'good neighbor' --

by John Meeker, Friday, February 01, 2013, 11:50 (4316 days ago) @ lee jurras

of long standing. In our little world there are names that integral to it's development and uses. You are most certainly among them. There is little more one can say, except to remind ones self that treatment for these diseases advances continually. For all of us, i am certain you will be in on-going thoughts and prayers. You have set landmarks by which we navigate. Thank You.

Normally "high grade" is a good thing, however...

by Caz, Friday, February 01, 2013, 13:55 (4316 days ago) @ lee jurras

...I am fairly certain your doctor meant something else. We will certainly be praying for you, sir. God be with you and your family as well as with the doctors.

Normally "high grade" is a good thing, however...

by Westley Ryan DeBord @, United States, Friday, February 01, 2013, 18:18 (4315 days ago) @ Caz

I just went through this procedure last Jan., I'm not sure what "High Grade" means, mine was listed as C-3 with a Gleason scale of 9, he told me it was the worst case of cancer he'd operated on in his 18yrs of business, today the PET SCAN say's I'm cancer free, went through radiation and all that, ya gotta get this taken care of Lee, NO MESSIN AROUND.

You can beat this Lee. Stay positive.

Bummer news for me

by Tom Richardson @, Clarksville, Arkansas, Saturday, February 02, 2013, 09:07 (4315 days ago) @ lee jurras

Hard news to take Lee.
Prayers are up for you and a successful resolve to you condition.

Prayers also for the rest of us prewar folks. Like a good prewar S&W, we were quality made with much attention to detail during the construction phase. Most of us were used hard the first sixty or so years then usage tapered off. That is when we discovered that our timing was a little off, end shake occurred, throat erosion and bore pits begin showing up. Rust pitting was forming under our butt stocks and in other tight places. Bore constriction so bad that a .22 would not go through a .45 bore even when powered by an extremely high pressure, while at other times the .22 would just dribble out into our holsters with no notice or effort from us. We also find that even with very limited use we can only shoot blanks.

Our consolation is there are good smiths to help bring old prewars back to a better condition, and good doctors that can do wonders with old bodies.

Again Prayers are up for you and your Doctor.
