Powder for .223?

by Catoosa, Wednesday, January 02, 2013, 22:02 (4289 days ago)

I'm just setting up to load the .223, and wondering what powder y'all like for that cartridge. Not trying for anything exotic - 55 grain bullets at enough power to work my Mini-14 for training and practice. I've got IMR 3031 and Accurate 2495BR, which my manuals say will work - any other suggestions?

through my old Mini and AR. WC844 is roughly GI H335. I tried TAC & AA2230 but prefer H335.

xterminator for the .223 and a close second would be aa2230.

Varget.

I use a ton of Varget. It is my main powder for the 223 and 22-250. Fills case up nice, clean and very accurate in Ny load I've tried.

I keep going back to W748...

H322 did very well. For some reason, when I spent my

Powder for .223?

For 55 grain bullets, I really like AA2230. 68-77 grainers, I like Ramshot TAC.

Bought a Ruger Model 77 in 223 in the mid 90's. Read an article in American Rifleman that gave a load of H335 and a 55 grainer. Tried it and never tried anything else. Will shoot under a half an inch at 100 yards from sand bags all day long.

there are a lot of choices

H322 can be a bit too fast for a 20" AR, I don't know how it works with the Mini. Varget and Rel15 are the usual recommendations for 75 and 80 grain bullets so they are probably on the slowest end of the spectrum. That is a range of about 30 different powders, any of which could potentially work well. A good AR might well shoot under 1 MOA with all of them, 1/2 MOA with the best. 3031 is a little bit faster than H322 so it is worth a try but might or might not reliably function the gun.

I've read that 4198 can be accurate in a bolt gun but probably won't operate a gas gun.

I've used 4198 for my .222

Not the same animal really. The rifle is a single shot, break open Brno. I need to work on that one some more as I have been unsatisfied with the results so far.

Thank you, one and all. Think I am going to try some 3031 just 'cause I have a bunch of it, and go from there.
