22LR ammo source.......

by Gunner @, St Louis, Saturday, December 01, 2012, 13:25 (4321 days ago)

I need to buy some CCI 22 LR standard velocity and HP Mini Mags...who's got the best prices??? Seems to be a big hit and miss on pricing when it comes to 22 ammo. Who is your favorite source for it?

Thanks,
Gunner

CCI has packaged the Mini-Mags in some "Choot 'em" promo

packaging at much better than usual prices. It is bulk packed rather than in the 100 ct plastic boxes. A lot of ammo is being sold out, apparently...

$20.99 a box + shipping http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/catalog/product/view/id/10320/s/cci-swamp-peop...

Bulk 22 ammo is of pretty low quality these days. I shoot in a weekly falling plate match with 22s and we try about everything. Here are our findings.

1. First place goes to CCI, but today we had a few FTF (failure to fire) with it.
2. Federal is reasonably good stuff with the higher priced 22 Automatic being better than the lower bulk HP stuff.
3. Winchester is not worth the purchase price. One shooter had 50% FTF with that stuff today. They switched to Federal and that FTFs went away.
4. If possible Remington is worse than the Winchester.

When it comes to 22 Long Rifle ammo, you really do get what you pay for these days. Quality also seems to have a big swing from lot to lot.

Our match is based on who gets the rack of seven plates down the fastest. So FTFs or FTE (eject) or puffers will cost you a match. We don't need the high end accuracy, but we do need reliability. If reliability doesn't matter then just buy whatever is cheapest.

I buy my Federal ammo at Walmart. Cheapest place around my town by far. They also sell CCI but they are higher than Federal.

I have had FTFs in one gun but another will never

fail with the same ammo. Example... Tactical Solutions conversion, Colt Police Positive Target, Browning 1911/22 all fired the bulk packed Remington Golden Bullet without a hitch, but the S&W 422 had 7 FTFs in a single magazine while lighting off everything else without a hitch.

My favorite is the Winchester PowerPoint and I've got about 16K of it accumulated now.

Three of use tried the bad Winchester ammo in our handguns and all three got FTFs.

I've seen same results as Charles....

The Winchester & Remington bulk 22lr is garbage I'm shooting it up in revolvers as it just don't work in any of my auto's. I've save my CCI stuff for serious work, but have been steady lying in a supply of Federal 525's as it shoots well in all my 22's. Oh...I bought a case of PMC awhile back....it is even worst than Winchester & Remington.

FYI....

Many out there consider the .22 a "reasonable" choice for self-defense expecially those with weak hands.

The reliability of even the best should rule that out as folly...

... that says Wal Mart is selling CCI Mini Mags in bulk packs, 1600 rounds in a green plastic ammo can for just under $100.

I bought a 4000 round case of American Eagle (Federal) 22 LR several years ago, and still have a good bit of it. I'm kind of saving what I have left, not sure why.

I have bought a variety of other 22LR over the years, and this American Eagle stuff and CCI are the best I've found. Remington Golden Box, like they sell in 500+ round boxes, is so bad that I gave the last of it I had away with the disclaimer that half of them probably wouldn't go off.

Winchester is selling "premium" (for lack of a better term) .22 LR ammo in 100 count plastic boxes like CCI mini mags come in. This stuff is good ammo, but is just as expensive as CCI.

I believe I'm going to stock up on the 1600 round bulk packs of mini mags.

A couple of guys bought some of this bulk CCI Mini-Mag we had a few FTS with it. The first ever with CCI ammo. The FTF rate was about the same as the Federal bulk, which is way lower than the Winchester or Remington.

This made us wonder if CCI wasn't taking some short cuts on this bulk Mini-Mag stuff.

Did any of you hear anything about

by Bud, Monday, December 03, 2012, 08:07 (4319 days ago) @ Charles

a rich Mexican fellow that has monoploized most, if not all, of the manufacture of 22 ammo? Something about one plant that is running and making most of the 22 ammo on the market today. I'm not sure where I read that................

No, however I HAVE noted

by Paul ⌂, Monday, December 03, 2012, 11:40 (4319 days ago) @ Bud

that there is quite a supply of Aguila brand or Aguila stamped 22 LR ammo. Their head stamp is a capital A, I've seen it on at least two different brands of ammo. Aguila is a Mexican brand, they turn out other calibers as well.

Not my favorite source but....

The best price I've seen recently on 500 round bricks of CCI standard velocity is from Dick's Sporting Goods. Think it was right at $30 these sjoot very well for me and are quiet out of all my suppressed .22's

Here is the best price I found on standard Vel a while back. Free shipping helped too.
