I need of set of grips made?
by woody, Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 19:31 (4360 days ago)
I need a set of grips made for a XR3 grip frame off my 357 flat top. Any suggestions? I want to have them made before I send the grip frame out for refinishing. I'm dropping off the rest of the gun at Turnbull's towards the end of the year.

There are three fellows on the Ruger forum that make grips, maybe more than that. CaryC, 41 Magnum, and others I forget. I would check there.......

Thanks Tony. I forgot about 41 mag. I have to be honest about Cary. I was going to send the grip frame out to him but changed my mind. I not sure if I take him the wrong. Seemed to have an attitude when I contacted him. I try not to support that when I'm trying to give someone business. I may be way off since it is tough to tell in PM's etc.

Cary does nice work, but you are right, he can come across surly. I accidentally locked horns with him and he has been cool towards me ever since.
There is another fellow over there whose name escapes me. He recently did a couple of posts about making grips from reclaimed maple pallet wood. He does real nice work and is very reasonable price wise. Do a search for pallet and he should pop up.
Dick over in Soda Springs, Idaho makes grips. Alan Harton makes grips as well, then there is Dustin Linebaugh to boot. Of course with those last two you are getting into the higher priced work......

Cary made me a set of honey mesquite grips for my Flatop 45 and the work is excellent with delivery times as stated. I exchanged a few emails with him and never had an issue. I just picked out the wood I wanted and he did the rest.
He would be my first choice should I ever again need some Ruger SA grips.
I don't know about the "surly" aspect, but I would take surly if it was part of a package that included honest, competent and timely. You never know what kind of burdens a fellow might be toting around with him.

You are correct Charles, his work is impecable. His attitude on the ruger forum at times borders on, well, beyond surly but who am I to judge? I have no idea what he may be enduring, but I did recommend him first.

Tony I'm glad you said what you did. I didn't want to think it was just me that took him that way. No business from me.

I will say his work looks awesome but I rather give my business to someone that appreciates my business and doesn't act like he is doing me a favor. I have a job that can be stressing at times and have a lot to deal with as a family but I try not to take it out on others. I feel for him if he has a lot going on in his life.

THAT WOULD BE EAGLE GRIPS, BUD. BUT BE CAREFUL AS THAT GUY IS A G.D CROOK. I BOUGHT THREE SETS ON HIS ULTRAIVORY AND ALL THREE BROKE WHILE SHOOTING. THEY LIED ABOUT REPLACING THEM AND NEVER HAVE DONE SO, NEARLY 360 BUCKS WOTH OF WHITE TRASH.
FURTHEREMORE, I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING ELSE AND FOUND THE OLD BILL FROM EAGLE FOR THE ULTRAIVORY STOCKS AND DAMNED IF THE CKOOKED S.O.B DID NOT CHARGE ME FOR FOUR SETS INSEAD OF THE THREE I ORDERED. I AM USED TO DEALING WITH HONSEST FOLKS AND NEVER NOTICED IT BACK WHEN.
SOMEDAY VENGENCE SHALL BE MINE SAYETH THE MERBOSKI !!

he was wearing a turban. Jeff Quinn walked up to him 'n said, "Nice hat". I about busted a gut. I would like a set of horn grips, but I really want the ones with the lightning looking white streak in them. Will have to see them before buying.

I spoke to Eagle customer service AND one of the managers about buying some horn grips in a caramel or brown color. Told them I was clear that the grips might have streaks, other colors, etc, but that the main color had to be honey or brown. Was told hat they could accommodate me, no problem, it would just take awhile for them to find the appropriate horn.
Ordered three sets of grips and waited with much anticipation. A package arrived almost immediately, which I thought strange. They had made a great deal of noise about how long it was going to take.
Open the box and there staring me in the face are three sets of GREEN horn grips. Not honey, not caramel, not brown, effing GREEN. No mistaking it either, not an issue with "do these greenhorn grips look kinda brown or really green?", nope, these were a sickly shade of green.
Called to complain and got a big song and dance about "natural product, color variations, blah-blah, woof-woof". End result, I got a refund only after paying return shipping from my pocket!
Never again.

Thanks Rob. I don't know why but for some reason I thought he did not have a site so I didn't even search for it.
Scott's grips are excellent. If you look under

burl mesquite, the first two pics of a set of Freedom Arms are ones he did for me at least ten years ago. They have seen a LOT of 454 recoil and they look as good as the day they arrived.
Nice guy to deal with also.
