I have thoughts, usually in the dregs of winter, when I’m not shooting very much, of selling off about 90% of my conglomeration of stuff and shooting the last ten percent one hundred percent of the time and getting good with it! Then something shiny comes along and I snap it up and play with it awhile and then the cycle repeats over and over again….

I really enjoy the variety I have but it comes at the price you mention. Not only do I not get good, I never seem to find the "perfect load". But I still like all of them.

.44 Special ... Keith 250 gr. SWC with 6.5 gr. Unique is quite nice.
.45 Colt ... 250 or 260 gr. with 8 or 8.5 gr. of Unique is all the power I need.

Kept a rough count of the number of rounds through my first two FA 454s by the number of cases of CCI SR MAG primers I went through. After the case #4 I quit shooting them as much.

The 7.5" that I used the most developed significant endshake and had to be rebuilt by FA a few years ago - probably due to the nuclear loads I used back in the 80s before the cartridge went mainstream and was toned down.

Sadly, speaking for myself, it takes a lot of practice with full power loads to be good with full power loads. Since I don't shoot them as much nowadays, I am pretty miserable with them at longer ranges.

(yes, my right hand signaling finger still has a overlarge middle knuckle)

In the early 2000's I shot my 6 1/2" 41 Mag Blackhawk a LOT, got pretty good with it, I would set up a 10" round steel plate at 100 yards, standing, using two hands with open sights it was easy to hit 6 for 6 on it with magnum loads. I shot that gun so much I had to send it to Dave Clements to have it worked over, cylinder had gotten a lot of play in it. Also was the gun I did most of my early 41 Mag load work up and chronographing with, it saw a lot of heavy loads.

That is wisdom for sure.
My Dad was an amazing shot. He shot one gun about 95% of the time, maybe more.
When I was younger and shot just my .45 Linebaugh gun all the time I was a much better shot.

In the Old days thats the way it was, one caliber and you did everything with it. Variety is the spice of life nowadays, a safe full of guns is a good thing but we don't spend enough time on any one gun to be great with it.
