Just to help you out with a new idea, Hoot... (reply)

There's a .358 Winchester and a .35 Whelen... Obviously this leaves a yawning gap to be filled by the .35x57 Mauser.

Not 9.3x57 or the 9x57... those are well-established old wildcats... but the .35x57, using an honest-to-gosh .358 bullet like the ones they load in .35 Whelen.

Because you need a new rifle built on a large-ring Mauser action.

You can thank me later.

The .35/.30-30 won't clean up a .35 Remington chamber (reply)

After looking up a couple of line drawings I'm pretty sure that the .35 Remington's shoulder is both wider and further forward than that of the .35/.30-30 wildcat, which would prevent a reamer for the latter from completely reforming the chamber.

It would still be a dandy choice for rechambering, say, a .357 Magnum Handi-Rifle.

Loading your own (reply)

I do get it, that thing about loading your own. This past season I killed a nice buck with my Marlin 336 rifle using my own handloads. I had loaded a garden-variety 170-grain flat point bullet.

Even with the Ackley-fied cartridge case and the extra few inches of barrel it was still no .308 Winchester...

...but it didn't matter. It was enough, enough to do the job decisively. That made me feel pretty good as, at this late date, it was the first game I had ever taken with ammo I'd loaded myself.

It's a good enough feeling that I want to do it again.

HAHAHA!! You'll get no "help" here! (reply)

That's a cartridge I have long wanted to play with along with the .35/30-40 and .35-303. I am a devoted 35 caliber nut (as well as other calibers) but none of them have made it into The Pile yet. I did rebore one .30-30 to .356 Win and my first levergun was a 35 Rem so I've got some representation in that platform. As for reloading, I load for everything except rimfires and shot shells so that wouldn't even be a consideration here.

Why do I do this to myself? (.35/.30-30 wildcat) (reply)

Methinks this little quote may have something to do with it...

"... it also would ensure that I could never ever buy factory ammo and that all cartridges shot through it would be my very own handloads".

There's a lot to be said for shooting only one's own handloads. I VERY MUCH regret giving in to the hype about "the 30-36 is marginal for elk, only 180 grain loads on up will do the job". I bought a box of 180's and used those on my only elk hunt. The 165's I normally use in that rifle would have croaked that elk just as dead. <sigh> Other than that one animal, all my big game has been taken with hand loads.

OH. And you're not the only one jonesing for a 35/30-30. It's probably a good thing I live where I do. Keeps me from doing too many silly things.

Why do I do this to myself? (.35/.30-30 wildcat)

In a world where .35 Remington rifles are readily available on the new and the used markets, I have somehow managed to cultivate a craving for a rifle chambered in the .35/30-30 wildcat, simply the .30-30 case necked up to take a .358 bullet.

Not only does such a choice most likely require that I have a suitable lever-action rebarreled, it also would ensure that I could never ever buy factory ammo and that all cartridges shot through it would be my very own handloads, not to mention that it would likely be just a touch less potent than the Remington round due to case capacity.

Oh, but don't think this makes me not want a .35 Remington. I still want one of those too.

[sigh]
