"If it shoots well, why even think of rebarreling it?" (reply)

Well, I'll tell you why.

Mainly it just doesn't look right to me. This is a classic European stalking rifle, and I want it to be set up properly with the caliber stamped on the receiver, and a proper tapered barrel contour.

Imagine you inherited a Jaguar XK120 with a lift kit and ladder bars like you might have seen once upon a time on a '72 Duster... that's what it looks like to me now. I'm really just a steward of this rifle and I will eventually pass it on to someone else. In the mean time if I have the chance to make it right, I will.

That rebarreled Mauser 98 (reply)

Thar appears to be a fine piece of equipment as it sits!

If it shoots well, why even think of rebarreling it?

I have others but when I wan dependable, I reach for the 6.5X257 John Hannah and I built back in 67-68 or so!
It was more precise back before I decided I wanted to get all that fire forming brass done in a hurry.

Stoopid is as STOOPID does!

Ha! That is Quite Nice! (reply)

Looks like a Buehler low profile safety was added when the scope mount was installed.

Originally, I'm envisioning a quarter rib with folding sights and assuredly claw mounts as evinced by the filled in dovetail in the front ring.

Definitely a prize!

That rebarreled Mauser 98

Hi all.

I got out that Mauser 98 stalking rifle I mentioned previously and took a few pics. The scope, as it turns out, is a mid-60's steel-tube Weaver, fixed-power 2.5x I think, with a post reticle.

You can see that the original chambering was stamped on the receiver.

Note the butterknife bolt handle and DSTs.

I have been firmly instructed to rebarrel this rifle only in 6.5x57, and as soon as I have freed up some project money I will do so. I would not hazard the disapproval of Hoot and JohnKDM.

-AaronB
