when I was 15 or so. It was the perfect farm gun. .410/.22LR. I harvest dove , quail, ducks, LOTS of coten tails and jacks with it. slaughtered pigs and goats with it, COULD have shot a couple close range mule deer , but refrained... I still have it, and still occasionally use it.

some. the camper version is really handy.

during WWII there were folding stocks made for the stevens/savage side by sides and combo guns.

Sarco had these for sale stilll in the government marked hermetically sealed packages, for
$4.99

i got one and eventually fitted it to the savage 24 camper 20ga /22 lr

Pre-24 here. (reply)

Stevens 22/410 with the Tenite stock. My paternal Grandfather was a farm auction, umm, "fan" and was always bringing home stuff. Not much in the firearms arena though. The Stevens however was a product of his hobby. He let his two grandsons carry it around the property to shoot blackbirds. He kept us stocked in shells.

Grandpa Hoot passed away and Grandma Hoot used it for various pests. Although what exactly a pest had to do to get Grandma to break it out is a mystery as she was very soft-hearted. Anyway, after Grandma passed away, it disappeared with my Uncle and I feared we'd never see it again.

My Uncle, in turn, decided to sell off most (all?) of his firearms as he aged and, wonder of wonders, the Stevens was on his list...for the princely sum of $75! I was in the middle of raising a passel of kids but managed to convince my wife we should part with the funds and it became "mine" (more on this later). Somewhere in my Uncles care the Tenite buttstock was broken and replaced with a walnut number from Numrich. I searched for a few years for a replacement but never found one.

Meanwhile, my wife fell in love with it and declared it to be hers. Who was I to object?

Browsing through a crowded gunshop one day, I happened on a Springfield Model 94B shotgun with a Tenite stock that looked correct. After I got home, I made some measurements and went back to the shop with my tape measure. The shotgun checked out to be the same measurements and I parted with $53 (taxes, you know) and rushed back home and swapped stocks. I later gave the shotgun to the son of a friend who had just returned from his stint in the Marines and wanted something for the home. It wasn't the best piece but the price was right!

My wife later gave the Stevens to our only daughter. It still lives here but she hasn't forgotten...

So, yes, I do have a soft spot for these. Also, the current prices are amazing for what was originally an inexpensive arm suited to double duty. There is a following.

Dad's Savage 24s

My father owns a pair of Savage model 24 combination guns. One is a .22LR over .410, and was considered my mother's gun when she was alive. The other is a .22WMR over 20ga. Neither of them has been shot in decades, although when I was a teenager I would sometimes carry the .410 after squirrels. The .410 in particular is in fairly beat-up condition, but both of them work just fine and are sighted in with their as-issued iron sights.

I'm an admirer of this kind of combination gun as I love the utility of it. In an era in which a farm might only have one gun, the Model 24 offered a LOT of utility. You could take small game with it, birds, ducks, basically any game up to and including deer under the right circumstances.

I'm guessing these arms don't get a lot of love these days. As a traditionalist I have to say, they have their place and are still worth it for general-purpose woods loafing and putting meat in the pot.

Anyone else here have a soft spot in their heart or head for these guns?

-AaronB
